ASHA 308 specifications of operating frequency lists 850, 900, 1800, 1900.

The phone does not work in Canada. The GSM frequency is 1900.

On the box it is written 900/1800 only.

What is the problem?

There are two different versions of Asha 308. One works on 900/1800 frequency bands and the other on 850/1900
Sounds like you've got the first version which is not going to work if your carrier uses the 1900 frequency band. You should get your phone replace from the point you purchased it, that is only if the retailer accepts returns.

YES, 1900 is mentioned, but the 1900 version does not exist.

If you purchase the phone that is meant for the region, it will work otherwise it will not. But the product is not available yet in Canada as obvious from Nokia Canada website.
