The default browser refuses to use wifi, telling me to switch on mobile data for which my service rarely works at all, making it impossible to install 3rd party apps (jad files) which arent in the nokia store. All other internet apps are happy to use wifi.

Experiencing that too. Some users here pointed that restoring to factory worked for them for sometime but later reverts back to this error. That's no solution.

Thought latest update will be correcting that but its still the same

Have you tried updating the device SW to the 5.92 SW version (note: the update is currently only available via Nokia Suite, not via FOTA)? Updating should solve the issue. I just tried myself using using the browser on a device with that SW version and did not see the problem.

edit: also make sure you don't have Wi-Fi switched off from your device settings (settings -> connectivity -> Wi-Fi -> on).

I'm on 5.92 and the problem is still here. Just double checked now.

While every other app will use wifi first, stock browser still connects with mobile data and won't connect if mobile data is off, wifi being turned on all the time.

Can you check what is the browser version from the browser settings menu (there's an "about" screen)?

It was updated the first time i used it after flashing the firmware. So, think its the latest one.

I tried to reproduce the issue with my collegue of mine and neither of us managed to make reproduce it.

could you try the following schenarios and see what happens:

*make sure you have "settings->connectivity->net connection" set as "ask first". does this change the behaviour in the browser?

if that does not change anything:

* remove the SIM-card from the phone and try to use the browser. Does it work with Wi-Fi then?

Armagon: Tried everything and here's my result

Selecting 'Wifi First' or 'Ask First' makes no change in the behavior of Nokia browser.. It is still happy in giving priority to mobile data.

When without the SIM card, it does work.. It connects to wifi in that case.

Put in the sim and try back, it will use wifi the first time (or to say it better, it asks what to use). After the first connection, from every subsequent try, its back to its mood of using mobile data. Doesn't connect to wifi anymore.

Seems Nokia Browser being more properly integrated, has the special privilege to connect automatically with mobile data without asking.

I will try to file a bug report of the issue internally, but the problem is that unless we have clear steps of how to reproduce the problem, there is little chance of getting any fixes done... :/ there is clearly some variable in your device which is different from my test device that we would have to try to figure out.

Primarily, i use SIM card of Docomo, but for testing purposes, i have tried it with Airtel and Vodafone and sadly the result is still the same.

I don't know why the problem doesn't appears for you. In any case, are you certain that the test devices that you used were not using Mobile Data instead? As in my case, even if i first connect it to Wifi network manually (from Settings> Connectivity> WiFi), it still uses Mobile Data (even though it shows connected to wifi) and if i turn it off, it starts saying 'No Network Coverage' or 'Mobile Data is turned off'. So, could be the case that it used mobile data in your case. Please try it with mobile data turned off.. Sorry if you tried it with data already turned off.

I don't know what else to say. Yes please file a bug report and if you need any more information (screenshots; etc) about the issue, I'm here to provide the details.

The issue is just only with Nokia Browser. All other apps be it WhatsApp or Opera Mini or Maps or VideoPlayer (YouTube streaming) work fine and happily ask me about how to connect before they connect.

Agree with Ishan ^ here.

Both chat and the mail app behave the same and are only happy in using mobile data and don't ask me about how to connect.

A great option to have will be a system wide setting which forces only wifi when the wifi receiver is turned on. That will do all the job.

Sorry i missed these apps as i don't use them often.

We finally managed to reproduce and see the problem on one test device. However when cross-testing on an another device, the issue does not appear. This currently leads me to believe this could be a hardware issue and not a software issue. But I will try to dig more details on the topic.

Thanks armagon for quick reply ....there are still bit of problems with new SW update on asha 311

1.Cancell option not working while asking while asking for wifi,mobile data ,automatic.

2.Nokia browser, Chat apps, Mail apps not working on wifi..

3. Unable to stream youtube video even if connected to strong wifi...gives error message  

4. When selecting any video files option with long tap ...use video option ..not working..gives message 'Selected service    not available.' that is in any video files.

5. Wifi signal drops drastically when we move 10 Ft away from wifi router ..in same room...while my laptop wifi n other cell wifi shows 100% signal..Asha shows 17%...

What is your suggestion...

I my case wifi works only for face book and music download, but the internet explore and nokia stores does not operate at all. also if mobile data is off wifi doesnt work

Armagon, adding a bit more here, Nokia Browser did work over Wifi initially. I can remember exactly that i have used wifi to watch videos and browse the web using Nokia Browse at my college. Mobile data was kept off to make sure that it doesn't use that.

The problem only started when i restored the phone back to factory and since then the problem is here. Could be a hardware fault too but I'm more confident its something wrong with the software.

Agree with Ishan about the Signal Reception. It keeps on fluctuating and sometimes drop to 30% even when the phone is sitting on the router. Anyways, this seems to be a hardware matter with the wifi receiver and i won't get into it much.
