Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

[ Edited ]

hello,

I have a request to all the Nokia Asha users who are not able to use Wi-Fi (WLAN) with Xpress Browser / other apps & services and receiving "turn mobile data on" or similar error message, or alternatively the Browser is always connecting with mobile data and not ever offering the WLAN alternative even when WLAN is turned on:

could you tell me the following details:

  • What operator SIM-card you are using?
  • Which country you are living in?
  • Phone model and device SW version (you can see this info by dialing *#0000# in device homescreen)

Based on our investigation this would be a problem with the operator settings (received with the operator configuration message. WLAN should work fine before that), not a phone SW issue. It would be very important to know what are the affected operators, so that we can do further testing on the topic and (hopefully) finally have a proper solution for this issue.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

If we save the setting sent by the operator, then there is a issue of WLAN.

If we create a manual access point then there is no such issue.

thanks for the responses so far.

Sayam384:

yes, exactly. In a "normal" situation those OTA settings would not be even needed with the most recent Asha phones - the phone should recognize the settings automatically when a SIM-card is inserted and at this stage WLAN should also still work normally. The problem may appear when operator configuration message is received & saved to the phone. Some operators are sending those automatically, for most other operators these can be manually ordered by the user with SMS message or operator web portal.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

if I am not wrong, I solved this problem in my asha 309 by the following instructions:

Settings > Configuration > Personal Settings > (Your Service Provider Name) > Use Preferred Acces Point > and select Yes.

then try loading your nokia browser again with WLAN on and mobile data off and see if it works.

you can go back to the instructions above and select "No" again.

Hope it help!

and btw, my feedback does not reach your workers, regarding the wifi issue that connect a build-in **bleep** browser which is used to load secured login sites like in Starbucks or McDonalds

yes, the workaround for the issue is to create your own configuration settings (and use those instead of the faulty operator sent ones), as you described. But we would like to fix the root cause and know what are the affected operators. We have lots of reports of the issue, but most of them just say "WLAN doesn't work" with no mention of what operator SIM-card was used.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

Operator: Tata Docomo, Vodafone
Country: India
Device: Asha 311; 5.92

Or basically, I'd say that settings sent by every Indian operator causes this problem. Don't know what special thing they include in the settings. Maybe the homepage address as the manual settings don't allow us to add that :smileyhappy:

Good to know that you peeps are taking interest in solving this. It won't stay here for long now :smileyvery-happy:

actually there is nothing "special" included in the faulty operator settings, instead there is one parameter (which should be normally always included) missing.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

But the same settings used to work in every Nokia phone purchased by me so far. From the 6500 to C2 and C3. They worked everywhere.
So instead of calling the settings faulty, shouldn't we be looking to find what's new with these Asha phones? As the settings menu and options are all the same.

C3 had WLAN too, but it worked fine and always asked how to connect.

You know more, but I doubt that so many operators are settings invalid settings. There's definitely something which doesn't follow the usual Nokia settings file guidelines.

yes, of course the way the access point settings are handled on the phone side has a part to play on this too, but the throughout analysis from our RND team was that there is one parameter missing from the received settings, which is causing the phone to skip the access point selection step. I sent them data from number of devices (Asha 302, Asha 306, Asha 309, Asha 310, Asha 311), using SIM-card from finnish operator "Elisa" and Orange Romania - all reproducing the issue. Before the operator settings were received, WLAN was working normally.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

We can't ask all the operators to change their settings file.
So maybe R&D team needs to change the way the settings are handled and teach the phone how to use them correctly even when that parameter is missing.

Do the needful :smileyhappy: Just wanna see it going away as here operators always send default settings for the Pay as you Go plan everytime you change the SIM.

I agree - it's a very tricky situation. But to be honest, there is very little to no chance of being able to change the access point management code on the Asha devices which are currently out in the market. Implenting "quick and dirty" hack to the code might just lead into further stuff break. Making sure the operator settings are correct (contain the data that is supposed to be included, according to how this functionality is specified) is the only option to get this properly fixed for current devices.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

Agree too. I'm well sure that devs can't just quickly do an improvement as this goes into the main code.

In that case I have an easy solution. As we already know that most of the settings are already bundled with the phone and are activated as soon we put in the SIM card. So what Nokia can do is join the other phone manufacturers and just stop accepting settings from the operators. I can only see Nokia as the seller (besides chinese phones) which can use settings send by Operator.

Now if operator settings aren't working well, better just ask the phone that it doesn't support the format of the file and reject it. Operators are well trained to manually provide the settings information to the users. So there won't be a as big trouble as happens ATM.

I can't even think that all Operators can be asked to modify the parameters used in the settings. Also, there's a chance that while fixing the settings for present phones, the operators may break the code and then the settings won't work for all the older phones. Dunno why but earlier operators used to have settings for each and every Nokia phone model. Now they seem to be keeping a universal file which is sent to every Nokia Phone.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

As a temporary workaround we should create an official FAQ, describing the workaround step and publish that on Nokia.com.

Also I just sent the so far reported operator names/other details to the responsible folks. Keep the operator names coming ;P

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

[ Edited ]

armagon, good idea! The problem is three-fold:

  1. Affected are all configurations which have a custom APN within their web/wap settings: Menu » Settings » Configuration » Default. Normally, this happens, when the network operator is still using a proxy for WAP and/or have a custom APN just for WAP. Those do not use the preferred Internet access point. This affects all Java MIDlets which use HTTP(S) like the traditional Internet browser of Series 40, and the new Nokia Xpress browser.
  2. There are several configurations which do not have a preferred access point at all: Menu » Settings » Configuration » Preferred. This affects all Java MIDlets which use sockets like Opera Mini, and Streaming (RTSP; YouTube).
  3. In the past, some Series 40 supported SUPL for A-GPS. Again, configurations without preferred access point stopped SUPL, and those models took ages to get a GPS fix. The solution is to create your own empty one at Menu » Settings » Configuration » Personal.

You can extract the 300+ configurations files from the storage of a Nokia Series 40 phone as WBXML. A lot of these configurations, even some of the pre-installed ones, are affected. That is a issue since the Nokia 6300i. Today with so many Nokia Series 40 with Wi-Fi, it is getting worse.

For Nokia Series 40, there must be a preferred access point and all accounts must use that. If the account is set to: Use preferred access point? No, then Wi-Fi does not start for that type of connections.

If requested, I write a small script to extract and detect all those configurations which are affected.

Interested? On my Nokia 210 still many configurations show the same issue. I extracted all of them with MobiMB. I just need a ‘go’ to create that script. Then you have a complete list.

By the way in the Nokia 210, I am not able to change the active configuration if there is no SIM inserted. The menu is dimmed. That is very nasty, especially because of this bug in this thread. Example: If the active configuration does not use the preferred access-point for the ‘web’ account, I cannot even install a single Java app via Wi-Fi because OCSP goes for that account. Because there is no SIM inserted, OCSP failes with ‘unknown response’. On the other hand, if I used a ‘web’ account which uses the preferred access-point, I am able to do anything via Wi-Fi. Nevertheless, I cannot change the active configuration, because that menu is dimmed.

Re: Question to Nokia Asha users facing WLAN issues

Lisa:

offtopic question, but it seem that the phone does not automatically recognize the internet settings for your SIM-card. You can try configuring the settings manually.

the steps for that are basically described here: http://developer.nokia.com/Community/Wiki/Manual_internet_settings_for_Nokia_Asha_and_Series_40_phon... (look at the "Manual internet settings for Asha touch and type and other Series 40 phones"-section).

As for the correct access point name for Fido, you'd probably need to use "wap.fido.ca" instead of plain "internet". (based on this list: http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=111656)
