Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

i dont think you can do this on any phone unfortunately.

if you needed to block all your sms you would probably need to speak with your network and ask them to do this for you.

but you would never know when you had a message waiting.

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

The software they create is for Series 60 (Symbian OS based) phones. The Nokia 6230i isn't one of these.

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

Hi,

As an elderly user, with a Nokia 3310, I use this only sparingly with average useage costs of about £2 per month, which I use on a 'pay as you go' basis. My server is O2.

Of recent date I have been receiving messages from a source with a telephone number of +407 222 7531 and a reference of 86201. When opened it turns out to be a pathetic joke, but the 'crime' is that the cash balance on my phone is reduced by about £1.50 each time.

I have tried to delete the message before opening but it will not go, nor does there seem to be a facility on the 3310 to block messages from this number (or any other). Has anyone had the same problem and how do I eliminate this annoying message?

Any help would be appreciated.

Edward

You won't really like this answer, but generally it's a lot easier to get on the lists than to get removed from them. There isn't an easy way to do this. At some point someone has probably either used your phone to sign up to one of the numerous joke/ringtone type sites out there, or signed you up via the internet (however usually they require that you send a text message from the actual phone rather than just inputting the number via a website for validation purposes).

The first thing you need to do is report this to O2 - and ask what options you have available to you. Depending on the person you get helping you they may be able to tell you the supplier of the joke service in question (although rather bizarrely sometimes I have heard the Data Protection Act being used as an excuse where they can't give you the company name related to a particular telephone number).

Once I was getting rather bizarre text messages on my phone where there was no readable characters what so ever. When I contacted Orange they told me that I would never be charged for receiving a message - only sending - which as you can tell is incorrect ! Luckily the texts stopped soon afterwards (and I wasn't being charged for them) so I didn't have to take further action.

If they do give you the company name then you will need to contact the company in question and ask them to stop the service immediately. I don't mean to sound negative but it will probably take some time for them to respond (meanwhile you will keep getting messages - read between the lines here !) - if they don't respond at all you can report them to Ofcom and take the legal route (if you do want to do this keep a copy of all documentation you send or receive) but to be brutally honest the easiest way (unless O2 offer you an option I haven't outlined here) is to change your number.

This way the line just dies and you can't continue getting charged for it - and in future be careful where you leave your phone - for example if you leave it on the table in a pub someone could quite easily do this again.

Hope this helps - good luck
Regards,

Edward

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

Hi edwardquan,

Thanks for your speedy reply. I will certainly try orange first and hope to have success this way, for I would not like to have to change my number which is known to so many friends. However if that's the road I have to go then so be it.

Thanks again.

Kind regards, Edward

No problem - glad to help.

You need to talk to O2 as they are your network provider - Orange is mine ! :smileyhappy:

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

With most of these SPAM SMS services, in the UK anyway, I believe they all have to, by law, stop when you reply saying:
STOP

It's always worked with me :smileyhappy:

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

Just to check. When you send STOP then they will know the number is active, wil they not just pass ur details on or is that legal? Not sure what the small print of these companies reads.
Is that an N95 in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?!?

Life's too important to take seriously.

I think according to OFCOM rules it's frowned upon if not illegal, but some of these types of companies are known to be very hard to stop receiving messages from.

The case you make is pretty much the same as replying to unsubscribe to spam email pretty much just confirms the email address is live - a Catch 22 situation.

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

Well in that case they probably don't just pass ur details on but more likely sell them. Makes sense, one pound fifty per message. Most people will just let it go if they only get one or two messages. Sounds like a money making business. Surprised they don't give a peak rate phone number for you to dial to get them to stop insted. Or maybe ask to borrow your girlfriend.

Re: blocking unwanted sms messages

I'm not saying it's definitely the correct way of doing things, and the best way to stop them, but I rarely get spam SMS's, but when I do, I reply with STOP and never hear from them again.

I'm on contract, so it's not as easy to tell when I'm being charged for them, but I've not noticed anything added onto it.
