6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Sorry for long posting...
I have recently purchased a 6230i to replace my 6310i.
I previously used a CA-42 USB cable for the 6310i but that is reported by the 6230i as incompatible - grrh.
And now I am trying to set up the Bluetooth connectivity.

I have (eventually) managed to get the 6230i paired to my Laptop using a Belkin USB Bluetooth and the Belkin software running on WinXP (IBM T41 laptop). PC Suite runs but seems to be a little unreliable over Bluetooth - will address that by sourcing a DKU-2 cable.

However, I have problems with pairing the 6230i with my Sony HBH-600 headset (works perfectly with 6310i) I can get the 6230i to discover the headset either by searching for audio enhancements or by setting up a new pair, however it always fails to set up the connection (never asks for passkey).

Similarly I cannot get my Ipaq 5550 to pair with the 6230i. I can start the pairing from the Ipaq which finds the 6230i but the 6230i never acknowledges the pairing attempt which then fails. If I start the pairing process from the 6230i it finds the Ipaq and attempts to pair but never asks to setup a passkey - the Ipaq does not seems to receive the pairing attempt.

I have set the auto connect option to yes and no with no difference.

Any suggestions ?
Needless to say all this worked perfectly with the 6310i.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Further to original post
The Bluetooth connectivity all works between the IBM T41, Ipaq 5550, Sony HBH600 headset and a Nokia 6810 phone.
So the problem appears to be the Nokia 6230i phone.

Further research gives some rather disapointing information.
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=2629
If you have problems performing pairing between an iPAQ 1940/2210 and the Nokia 6230 and continually get an error similar to "Cannot pair devices for security reasons" then it's related to the problem outlined in that document.

This is a Hardware issue and not a software issue related to the WIDCOMM BTW-CE Product. There are two types of keys that can be used for pairing:

- Combination keys
- Unit keys

The key type that is used is pre-set in the Bluetooth Radio Firmware. The WIDCOMM BTW-CE Bluetooth software
does not control this setting. The radio on the iPAQ 1940 uses unit keys by default. These Nokia phones reject the use of unit keys in pairing because it is not as secure as combination keys.

Users of older HP iPAQ models should check the HP Drivers page for the latest OS or Bluetooth software for their devices.

I note that my Ipaq is older than the two models mentioned and that my headset is 16 months old. So it looks as if the 6230i is going back - stupid no backwards compatibility.

thanks to Geekzone for the info.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

looks like the thing with your pda is a problem with bluetooth on the 6230i.

however, the bt headset could be down to incompatibility. take the phone in for repair and try it with the headset, if it still doesnt work it could be the phone and headset use different profiles.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Hi,

No its not the profiles. I checked all the various hardware on the Bluetooth Qualification website.

The Sony HBH600 headset uses exactly the same profiles as the Nokia HS-36W and HS-4W(which apparently is supported by the 6230i). GAP, Handsfree-unit (1.0) and Headset-HS.

Also all the Nokia 6310i, 6810 and 6230i use the same headset profile (Headset-AG).

I regret to say the HS-36W does not pair with the 6230i either.
I did not bother looking up the Ipaq profiles.

Unfortunately this needs Nokia (and all the other manufacturers) to state what pairing protocols are used with all their equipment.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Bluetooth protocols are very open to intepretation so we are always going to have these problems. The spec from the SIG Bluetooth group even to this day is NOT finalised and is still evolving. I look forward to this day when there is full cross manufacturer compatability! I would recomend that you use a Nokia headset/carkit with a Nokia phone and a Sony with a Sony etc, etc. Having said that I have had no issues with most Motorola headsets on several Nokia phones but not Nokia headsets on Motorola product!

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

I would like to take your recommendations but.....
As I stated above, the 6230i uses a different type of pairing key so it is incompatible with most pre-existing Bluetooth kit including Nokia.

In order to be compatible with the 6230i I need to purchase
a new Bluetooth headset - £35
a new PDA - £450
a new fitted car kit - £200
and the Nokia carkits don't come close to the Parrot 3400 LS-GPS in use-ability and functionality.
Or
return the 6230i and find a suitable phone that is backwards compatible.

Why is it so hard for manufacturers to make the customer friendly decision to make new kit backwards compatible ?
It is not environmentally friendly to chuck out everything that currently works because a new item is not backwards compatible.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

The newer bluetooth protocols are backwardly compatible with the older devices, I think you problem is more likely to be the firmware version in your phone (possibly has bluetooth issues). The earliset version that may solve the issues is 3.5 but the latest 3.62 is better.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Hi Stevemess

Have you checked out the ipaq webpages for an update to the bluetooth on the pda.

One of my mates was getting an error, cannot pair for security reasons, she went to the HP website and found a patch for ipaq which solved the problem

Well the suppliers are sending me a replacement 6230i so I'll be able to see if it is the phone itself or the 6230i model that the problem.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Hi,

Check the HP website in the vain hope that a patch had been uploaded - but no. Ipaq is update with updates and patches.

Problem does seem to to be the phone.

unfotrunately you are incorrect here. I had the 6230 with an ipaq1940 and got the 'cannot pair for securoty reasons ' message. it means that the ipaq does not have the correct drivers installed to connect to the phone. I sorted this by getting my bluetooth software for the 1940 updated and after that i could connect.

granted i had a 6230, but the same thing will apply.

Still waiting for replacement phone to arrive, but...

Ipaq 5550 is fully patched up to date , and works with 6310i and 6810 phones.
IBM T42 laptop works with 6310i and 6810 phones and Ipaq.
Two different headsets (Sony and Nokia) work with 6310i and 6810 phones.
None of the above work with the 6230i.

All the Bluetooth profiles across the 6310i, 6810 and 6230i are the same.

Geekzone give very detailed and technical explaination of why the 6230i has problems.

So in my book I would say its the phone thats the problem.

Why do you think its not the phone ?
The 6230i is running v03.50 firmware, I believe the 6230 is running v4.44 as the current version. So I don't think the two can be directly compared at the detailed level.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Well - finally a replacement 6230i with upgraded firmware has been supplied.
The first replacement had exactly the same problems as previously noted.

Now 6230i will pair (and exchange data) with Laptop, Ipaq, both bluetooth headsets (Sony & Nokia) and with 6810 mobile.
Still will not pair with 6310i but that is not a problem to me now.

It took more than a month to get here - which is not really good enough.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Hi,

It may well help you - the newer firmware seems to have made the difference for me. It could also be that the bluetooth chipset in your phone is malfunctioning. Have you tried a different handset of the same model.

Re: 6230i Bluetooth connectivity problems

Hi,

After the phone was upgraded with newer firmware it worked with most devices.
The 5550 Ipaq doesn't have a recent bluetooth patch, but there is a 'patch' for the bluetooth keyboard - instelled that (either though I do not have the bluetooth keyboard) and the 5550 and the 6230i can exchange files sucessfully.
The keyboard patch must include an update for the critical bluetooth files.

finally
now ok
