My guess is your office uses EAP or PEAP which is not supported by the Asha 311  which only supports WEP, WPA and WPA2.

Regarding updates- updates vary by region/product code/network locked status. If a latest firmware is not available for your device you'll not be able to install it.

If such is case Nokia should issue a press release that WIFI seamless functioning is not garunteed. Let Nokia be bold to accept the Lacuna that WIFI is defective

Try to update the software of your phone and check if you are able to access social application using Wi-Fi connection only.
