I purchased Nokia N8 about 2 months ago. Lovely phone, camera etc. However I am having serious issues with wlan/wifi. I have set up my phone to connect only to wifi or wlan. I believe I have all the settings correct. But when I try to connect to the web I keep getting the message that connection charges will be incurred etc and when I click on it goes online using my phone internet ie O2 wap service or my O2 internet service. Therefore I am being charged even though I have connected to wifi. I have tried everything but this is getting really annoying. I am abroad at the momen and my hotel has free wifi etc. Even when I have gone into my O2 store I might aswell be talking to the wall. No good. I should have purchased an Apple I4. Can someone please help me.

I presume your wifi acces points are set up correctly and are working. Check the following.
Goto Settings>Connectivity>Settings, set Data use in home country and Data use iwhen abroad to Wlan only or Always ask.
Now click on Destinations>Internet and make sure the wlan access points are set higher in the list of priorities.
Then go to the individual apps that require internet access and make sure the access point settings is set to the wifi or Internet.

For all people experiencing problems with N8 (and some C series phones) and WLAN connections : Is your router a Linksys, Alcatel, Thompson or Speedtouch?
I had a Speedtouch 585 router v7 and couldn't connect to my home WiFi, but could connect at my friends' Wi-Fi's. I tried renaming the SSID with no blanks, manually setting the IP's and DNS, but the problem persisted. And the problem was the router. Since the firmware upgrade, the QoS (Quality of service) parameter cannot be tampered with. You have to turn it off manually. To do so, do this :
1) Open a command line window (start-->accessories-->command line OR start-->run--> type "cmd")
2) type telnet 192.168.1.254 and press enter (this was the router's IP address in my case, it may be 192.168.1.0 or 192.168.0.1) (If it doesn't connect right-click the connection icon at the bottom of the screen-->properties-->TCP/IP and note the IP address)
3)enter your username and press enter (default admin)
4)enter your password and press enter (default <blank>)
5)the router command line logo should appear. Type wireless and press enter
6)type qos and press enter
7)type config mode disabled and press enter
8)type saveall and press enter
9)type exit and press enter
Find your WiFi in your N8 as usual (delete any previous access points of your WiFi if any) and set it as first in priority (in N8 : settings-->connectivity-->settings-->network destinations-->internet)
You are ready !

had a LOT of frustration with this issue on a C5-03... turns out that for WiFi to connect... you must NOT connect WiFi!!! Sounds crazy but true... With my Blackberry I'd usually click on connect WiFi, then launch the internet browser/ facebook app etc. and it will "know" that I want to connect via WiFi. But with Nokia somehow this confuses the apps... so the "right" way is NOT to connect to WiFi first, simply launch the app, THEN an option appears asking you which way you want to connect, so you select WiFi... This is extremely counterintuitive and I hope Nokia support will correct it in the future.
