If the connection doesn't succeed, check the connection settings in Nokia Suite menu Tools > Options > Connect to internet. Select your network operator from the list or, if not found, use the manual settings and define the access point name to be used in your operator network. You can also define the user name and password if these are required by your operator.

CA-101D is not only compatible with C3-00 and Nokia 500, it is also compatible to other Nokia devices particularly S40 and S60. This means, one connectivity cable can be used to different Nokia devices.
It should not be a concern then if you will use that cable as I mentioned above, it is one of the compatible cables you can use for your device.

If your device isn't recognized by PC when plugging via USB cable, try the following actions to recover:
Do you have the Nokia Suite installed already into your PC? If not, you have to download and install it as you will be able to update the software of your device (if there's an update available) or reinstall it (if no update available).
I'm afraid you cannot reinstall the software of your device over the air. You will have to use the Nokia Suite as mentioned above.
