Hello,
I've set up my gmail on E72 and under mailbox settings->When to Sync I see an option called 'After Notification'. Can anyone explain what does this setting do and does it work ?
Thanks

I don't know what it may be 'synching' with but it means it will synch the emails every time you receive the notification of a new one.

I guess then its a bug in E72 as even after my gmail has received new email, I do not see that email on my phone. So "After Notification' is not working.
Can anyone tried this option and did it work ?
Thanks

Any inputs ?

I have two phones with feature-pack 2: E52 and N86. Both have the email option you name. I too have wondered how that option works and have been hoping to see a response answering the question. I guess I will have to continue to hope.

Why guess its a bug in E72? It isn't anything to do with the E72. A search using google or of these forums would tell you that this does not appear to work and no one seems to know what it means including Nokia, but it is in your NM software, not part of the E72 make up.
Certainly if your phone does not recieve an email then any 'after notification' event will not occur if that indeed is what it means which I suspect it does. What else could it?
If you are not receiving push emails from your gmail account at all then that is a different question than the one posed initially.

Push email will work if I change the setting to say sync every 10 mins or use other time parameter. Even with Manual sync it will work and emails will be seen on my phone. So yet another feature that Nokia can included in their email service without any benefit.
Can Nokia comment on this ?
Thanks

Where do you set the sync interval?

Go to your mail box settings and select the option when to sync. You can select the time as per your choice.

I don't use the phone for mail, so I haven't set up a mail box. I only use the sync for contacts.
Do I need a mail box in order to change the contacts sync?

Nopes not for contacts sync

When pushing mails to the device from server it will be pushed almost immediately.
If you write an email on the device would it be pushed back to the server? If not could this be a syncronization feature syncing mails from the device to the server?

I experienced the same problem and landed onto this page after searching for solution. Although I noticed one thing, which might be of use to someone. I configured gmail account using Nokia Messaging configuration and that works fine without dropping connection, but other gmail account with manual imap configuration drops connection after a while if i select "After Notification" option as update interval.
So, it seems like nokia only supports imap idle if we configure using Nokia Messaging, which allows upto 10 email account configurations as far as i know. Good luck.

I think u must be talking about E7 and not E72 , this After Notification option is displayed in E7 only not E72 , i m using E72 and also E7 , i have this same option in E7 , not in E72 , E72 works great with emails but E7 is really bad in delivering emails on time.

The "after notification" option is available also on the E72, like on the E75, as long as you are using Nokia Messaging. I suppose the same is valid for E7, N8, etc.
BTW, that's the "push" option.
If you configure your mailbox manually (i.e. without Nokia Messaging), you don't have the push option (after notification), but can only set up a polling interval.

Hmm.. don't know. Give it try and please report back here ![]()
I've never tried configuring the e-mail on my E75 without Nokia Messaging, but as far as I know the "after notification" option should only be available with it.
Try and see what happens.. hopefully you can also check at your POP3 server if/how/how often your phone connects to poll your mail?

As far as I can tell, "After Notification" does exactly the same thing as "Manual".
I did notice that neither setting is manual, in the strictest sense. With either active, the mere act of viewing a mail account initiates a connection, assuming the last view wasn't within the past xx minutes. There doesn't appear to be an option where the user must manually select Connect. The amount of data transferred is small, but I suspect this does annoy some users on a pay-as-you-go data plan. All you want to do is read an old email, but the phone connects anyway.
Getting back to "After Notification"...after notification of what? Or by what? Maybe this setting was originally meant to interact with a special standby screen email plugin that operated independently? Or something like that?
I wouldn't think it would have an effect if you're using Nokia Messaging. Actually, I think the field would be grayed out, since the Nokia server would always control the push or polling interval, eh?

I think the (intended) meaning of "after notification" is that your phone is always (or in the set date/time interval) connected to the Nokia Messaging server, and whenever the server sends a notification to the phone (e.g. a new e-mail has arrived), then the phone fetches it.
This option is not supposed to be available when you don't use NM, as IMAP IDLE is not supported in newer phones.
I'm a bit puzzled. Hopefully somebody can explain this a bit more?
