Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

I setup my e mail account. I can receive mail, and that's OK.

For sending mail I must force SMTP authentication but I can not find. Only that I find is StartTLS, SSL/TLS and Off (Connection settings - Outgoing e mail - Outgoing mail server).

I use officially email client build in E61. How I can force SMTP authentication?

If you put your username and password in the outgoing mail server settings then won't it use SMTP authentication?

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

When using the phone rather than my wireless network to send, I found that I had to use my phone network provider's SMTP server. I am with T-mobile in the UK and with BT for email. I called T-mobile and they gave me the SMTP server name to use. Worked fine and doesn't need user name and password.

The culprit could be the port number.
So, you can try change the port from 25 to 587.

Port number can be found at...
E-mail settings > Connection settings > Outgoing e-mail > Port

I hope it will work.

I want to use my own mail server, not SMTP from my mobile operator. Nokia E61 don't suport SMTP authentication. I buy ProfiMail software and it's work tiptop :-)

Has this thing got any further than just stating that Profimail works? Hey NOKIA dev.team!?

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

I had my port set as 587 and had the same problem with sending emails. Now I changed the port setting back to default, no more problems!

Very strange. It looks like that it depends on service provider's security policy.

I've found a website related to the problem:

Well, the situation might be somewhat complicated...

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

Hey!

The problem still exists! It really doesn't matter if you use port 465 or 587 for your mail server. E61 connects via SSL but doesn't send AUTH with username/password defined in the Outgoing connections. It works fine for local mails as there is no auth required for relaying but it doesn't send the auth and thus there's not relaying allowed...

Nokia DEV team! It is a SIMPLE fix that would be extremely nice to find in the next firmware release.

THANK YOU!

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

I have the same problem with the mail application on my N73. My SMTP server needs the auth to send emails. Whenever I try to send an email it stays queued and nothing happens.

Is there still no fix or workaroud to force auth?

Cheers

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

I have the EXACT same problem. And I am super UPSET with Nokia. None of their support engineers on the ground here, even KNOW about this issue. They're instead asking me to switch off, take out the battery, put it back in and it should work!

NOKIA, you can lose me as a customer for this one. I am serious! This is a big bug. I am finding similar support group entries and not just for this phone model.

I expect a fix in the next one week otherwise, I am going to escalate this.

And I think more of us should raise this with Nokia, only when they sense how many of us are affected by this, will they do something about it.
Thanks

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

If you enter a user name and a password in the settings for the outgoing server, the E71 definitely uses SMTP AUTH (meaning it provides user name and password while sending out mails).

Unfortunately there is a bug in the implementation, at least in firmware version 100-07-76 of the E71.

The phone authenticates itself correctly (AUTH PLAIN), but then it sends a reset command (RSET), which is completely nonsense. With this command the previous authentication gets deleted, and therefore the mail isn't accepted.

This problem already occurred with the E61i, too:
http://skolobov.wordpress.com/2007/08/24/bug-in-nokia-e61i-smtp-client-software/

More than one year ago ....

There is a dirty workaround for people who run their own Linux mail server. The workaround disables the RSET command in the server, so the phone can't incorrectly delete the authentication any more. It is unknown if the workaround has got any side effects, like producing memory leaks.

If you have Qmail, please see the link above.
If you have Postfix (V2.3.8), please comment out line 2832 in file:
src/smtpd/smtpd.c

So it should look like:
/*
* Restore state to right after HELO/EHLO command.
*/
chat_reset(state, var_smtpd_hist_thrsh);
//mail_reset(state); ****COMMENT OUT THIS LINE****
rcpt_reset(state);
smtpd_chat_reply(state, "250 2.0.0 Ok");
return (0);

Again, this is only a quick and dirty workaround. Though it works for me, the bug should be fixed in the firmware of the phone, so nobody has problems with it any more.

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

Okay, I've since found this[1] "bug" discussion.

In short, it appears that S60 email client is using TLS1.0 which has padding issues (padding is used for security[2]). If TLS3.0 is used it should be fine. My mail server is Exim4 and it uses GNUTLS for licensing reasons -- if it was able to use OpenSSL instead, then this might not be an issue.

So, is there any way to force the E71 to use TLS3.0 instead of TLS1.0 ?

At least we know who's at fault here.

Thanks and Kind Regards

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

I don't think that this bug has anything to do with TLS and encryption. It occurs during the authentication, independently from the encryption settings (StartTLS, SSL/TLS or none).

In fact I didn't use any encryption (no TLS) for my tests, the bug occurred anyway.

Here is the (simplified) chat between the E71 and the server:
----------------------------------------------------------
Server: 220 server.mydomain.com ESMTP Postfix (Debian/GNU)
E71 : EHLO [192.168.0.8]
Server: 250-server.mydomain.com (...)
E71 : AUTH PLAIN xxxxxxxxxxx
Server: 235 2.0.0 Authentication successful
E71 : RSET
Server: 250 2.0.0 Ok
E71 : MAIL FROM: SIZE=55052
Server: 250 2.1.0 Ok
E71 : RCPT TO:
Server: 554 5.7.1 : Relay access denied

Here is the (simplified) chat between Thunderbird and the server:
----------------------------------------------------------
Server: 220 server.mydomain.com ESMTP Postfix (Debian/GNU)
TBird : EHLO [192.168.0.3]
Server: 250-server.mydomain.com (...)
TBird : AUTH PLAIN xxxxxxxxxxx
Server: 235 2.0.0 Authentication successful
TBird : MAIL FROM: SIZE=557052
Server: 250 2.1.0 Ok
TBird : RCPT TO:
Server: 250 2.1.5 Ok
TBird : DATA
Server: 354 End data with .
....

See the difference? The E71 sends an "RSET" (=reset) after "AUTH PLAIN", and that is nonsense. By this the previously made authentication is deleted. So this is more or less a very simple bug in the SMTP protocol implementation, not in TLS or something else.

Re: Nokia E61 and email - problem with SMTP authentication

I sent this to the customer care centre here in Germany - got a reply that they have forwarded it to the software department. Sounded a bit like a standard message.

I'm sure that the developers will be interested in this, the bug is simple and it should be easy to solve it. But I don't know how to get the information to them.

If anybody else would like to send the bug to Nokia, here comes the short description:

====================
While sending out an Email, the E71 initially authenticates itself correctly to the mail server. But then it resets the authentication, and so the Email isn't accepted.

Here is a (simplified) recording of the communication between the E71 and an email server:

01 Server: 220 server.mydomain.com ESMTP Postfix (Debian/GNU)
02 E71 : EHLO [192.168.0.8]
03 Server: 250-server.mydomain.com (...)
04 E71 : AUTH PLAIN xxxxxxxxxxx
05 Server: 235 2.0.0 Authentication successful
06 E71 : RSET
07 Server: 250 2.0.0 Ok
08 E71 : MAIL FROM: me@mydomain.com SIZE=55052
09 Server: 250 2.1.0 Ok
10 E71 : RCPT TO: someone@somewhere.com
11 Server: 554 5.7.1 : Relay access denied

You will find the bug in line 06. The E71 sends an RSET command (=Reset), which deletes the previously made authentication. Therefore the mail server rejects the mail transfer (line 11).
