Maps 3.8 feedback

Maps 3.8 feedback

After the upset of the faulty original update to maps 3.8, I've tried it out a few times now (on my E6) and offer my comments and feedback.

Positive:

I always use assisted GPS and 3.8 seems to acquire the current position very quickly.

Accuracy is improved too. When at home v3.6 would frequently try and tell me I was at an even numbered house on my road. There are no even numbered houses on my road. No such problem with 3.8

The ability to clear the search history keeps a neat freak like me happy :smileyhappy:

The increased size and spacing of some of the menu touch buttons is an improvement to the user interface, considering we may be operating the software while driving. It's also a particular improvement on the E6 where the relatively small screen and high pixel density meant that some buttons and text were previously far too small. The graphics on the location information screen where such things as the option to add a location as a favourite or select to navigate to a location is found, still needs further upscaling on the E6, in my opinion.

Route overview and preview is much better than that on 3.6. Strangely though the road names are missing from the dedicated route overview screen when you step through each turn in succession but not in what I think of as the route preview.

Addition of a weather application

Negative:

The modular or at worst messy fractured installation. All maps functions are no longer directly accessed from one unified menu icon. We now have six! If this separate component part approach is taken I believe we should therefore be able to select which component parts we keep and which we uninstall depending on our personal needs. At the very least "Drive" should also be instantly accessible from the within Maps as started by the main launcher/shortcut/main maps menu icon.

I don't believe "map loader" should be really be considered an applet on it's own, with it's own menu icon. This could be neatly included as an option or setting accessed within the main maps application.

The weather application could do with expanding so that you can select the forecast location. Since we use maps when traveling to places, it is often handy to know what the weather forecast is for your destination, not just where you are now. The hourly time line is excessively detailed and contributes to on screen clutter. Banner adverts!!! Need I say more?

The big bad ugly one... The vertical information bar down the left hand side of the screen, in drive mode, in which distance traveled etc. Is displayed. It takes up pretty much a quarter of the screen width on the E6. This is way over the top and marginalises the map itself. There was nothing wrong with the proportions of this element in v3.6. Please shrink it down at the first opportunity. Thanks.

Re: Maps 3.8 feedback

Hi 203,

I totally agree with your review for this upgrade.

I wonder why they chose to fragment the App, when it would have been better to access everything from one location.

Also, smeof the Apps (Weather for example) don't work on my E6...they don't react to touch at all. I had experienced same issue with Angry Birds before.

Re: Maps 3.8 feedback

I totally agree with all positives and negatives of the update. I just wanted to add the following:

First of all - these 7 programs that have spawned, are a really messy thing. I have created a folder in the applications menu to put them all there, as I had to scroll down across all other applications in order to reach the navigation programs down at the bottom.  Why didn't your designers do the same thing with a pretty nice new folder icon just to keep all these grouped together. In addition, in case any new Map and location services spawn, they can be kept in this very same folder, instead spilling around the messy applications menu.

Second - the new widget that has been added. Fair enough, but not customisable...I may prefer 'Now and here' or weather app rather than check in app or guides app.

Third - it is an effort to start navigating from the maps application. Yes, it is true that separate Drive application is easy to use and pretty much comfortable, but it is really hard to call it from the Maps application. What's worse - the maps application and the drive application are now two separate processes. When you start navigation from the maps application, and while driving you accept a call, then you're not automatically switched back to drive, but instead the phone get's locked, so you have to unlock it, then switch to open applications, then select either drive or maps.

And this is not all - if you exit the drive application, the map application remains open and you're not automatically switched to it, so you can see it's still running by the network and gps activity icons still displayed in the notifications area, and it drains the battery in no time. Even if you exit both applications, the map application remains open in the background and it still drains battery to keep the electronic compas up-to date. I get the battery drained in no time after running the new maps.

I like the new side bar displaying details about speed and time, but true - it is a bit too big. It might be either customisable to use smaller font, or to be resizeable according to user preferences, rather being fixed.

And at the end, why did you remove the automatic day / night time switching of the color scheme? It was related to current time, and I did not have to bother switching color schemes while driving. It is not sucha  big thing to do, and yes, you can still add a control "Auto switch night/ day colors - YES / NO'

Cheers.

Re: Maps 3.8 feedback

[ Edited ]

Me too ... And one more deal-breaker: I drive a motorbike and need visual directions without distraction. For this purpose Maps 3.06 has a very useful screen, showing where I am at the bottom, what and when to do next in the middle, and what to do after that at the top:

Maps 3.06 directions

This screen option is missing in Maps 3.08 ...

Also, bikers don't just drive from A to B. We often drive from A to F via B C D E and back to A via G H I J (waypoints are important to me).

I decided to refurbish the poor thing and bring it out of its misery, only installing the Anna 1 + 2 and the extra hotfix package - and I'll be quite happy to freeze my N8-00 at this stage. Life is too short to mess around with defective updates.

Best regards,

Hans

Re: Maps 3.8 feedback

Navigation experience from GPS fix to target location is much quicker with 3.8. Information displayed while driving very useful. Need "add to route" for trip planning with stop over. At least I
want to understand why this feature has been removed and how Users should plan trips without it in 3.8. Thomas using E7

Re: Maps 3.8 feedback

I experienced a little issue the other day.

While driving to my destination, Maps 3.8 wanted to send me on a route I didn't want to take.

Mid journey, I went to route settings and changed the route selection from "optimised" to "faster route" and returned to the navigation screen but there was no change. It was only when I closed maps completely and restarted it that the route to my destination was recalculated according to the new setting.

If you change the route selection setting mid journey, perhaps it should initiate an immediate route recalculation and not require a restart.
