Nokia Maploader

I am trying to make use of my Maps functionality on my N95, and would like to download maps in advance over my LAN connection rather that at great expense over an internat connection.

I gather that Maploader is the thing to use, but when I go to the Nokia site and search for it, the page that I am sent to fails to open.

I have two questions:

1. Is Maploader the best thing to use for this?
2. Anyone know why I cannot get to the page?

Any help here would be useful.

Thanks

Re: Nokia Maploader

Yes, Maploader is the programme to use for downloading maps. It is also available for download from the smart2go.com website if you are having problems downloading it from the Nokia site.

Re: Nokia Maploader

Thanks for this. I am confused by the Smart2go site - when I try to download the MapLoader software, what I seem to get is the Maps application that was already loaded onto my N95. I did download this, and installed it, but I seem to be no further forward???

Hi jcaswell

You are getting the pop-up to accept the conditions? Site working OK at 23.00hrs. Is your Windows NET Framework 3 up to date?

Re: Nokia Maploader

The latest version of Maploader is extremely reliable. On my connection I can obtain the Australian map in 4minutes. This map loader can also be used for other handsets using NOKIA MAPS. ie; E90, etc.

Re: Nokia Maploader

What SEEMS to have been the problem is that I was trying to download Maploader using Firefox rather than Explorer - switching to IE solved the problem. Compatibility problems with Firefox?

Thanks to you all

Re: Nokia Maploader

Further question - I downloaded all of UK, but it does not seem to have made a difference - it still cannot find maps that should be there.

Where would it store the maps on the phone? If I knew, I could check that the download happened correctly.

Re: Nokia Maploader

Maps should go into a folder called "cities" on your memory card.

Unfortunately the "cities" folder is a mess of cryptically numbered subfolders (many of them empty) which are not suitable for human consumption.

Alternative method to ensure that you have the right maps: go to http://nokiamaps.moo.no and follow the instructions. You don't even need Nokia Map Loader for it.

Re: Nokia Maploader

diabo,

are the maps you link to the earlier maps or the maps you can update to for V2.0 beta?

I haven't tried 'em with the beta yet.

Re: Nokia Maploader

Sorry diabo, I wasnt clear. If you use Nokia Maps 2.0 (beta) and check for new maps you are told there are and you can download via the phone (or Map Loader 1.3). However, if you are using the current version of Nokia Maps there are no new maps available.

The links you have on your site are for ( I assume) the current version and not the 2.0 beta.

Re: Nokia Maploader

Since the maps from the links work on my phone with the "old" version of Nokia Maps (I haven't tried 2.0 yet) I'm pretty sure your assumption is correct.

:smileyhappy:

Maybe Martin (martinletis.blogspot.com/2008/02/nokia-maps-download-links.html) can be talked into firing up his packet sniffer again to check the URLs of the map files that Nokia feeds to 2.0?

Re: Nokia Maploader

hi folks

I'll give the 2.0 maps (0.0.11h, instead of 0.0.9h) a try in the weekend and post the links to the usual location. hold on just a bit :smileyhappy:

I have tried maps 2.0 beta on my phone, but it runs terribly slowly - my 6120 has a 192mhz arm, maybe not enough, or is there some buggy code in the 2.0 release?

Re: Nokia Maploader

There must be lots of buggy code in 2.0. It's a beta, and we all know the Nokia coders usually don't get it right the first (second, third) time.

Your 6120c has a 369 MHz processor, but apps that try to figure out system properties like the speed just report what the phone code tells 'em.

Re: Nokia Maploader

hi there,

I have updated the post on my blog
http://martinletis.blogspot.com/2008/02/nokia-maps-download-links.html

now you have all the links for
- maps 0.0.9h (nokia maps 1.0.2, map loader 1.3.0.7)
- maps 0.0.11h (nokia maps 2.0beta, map loader 1.3.5.0)
- voices (same for both versions)

enjoy!

Re: Nokia Maploader

Great!

http://nokiamaps.moo.no updated as well. You can choose between:

- 0.0.9 for most phones,
- 0.0.11 for beta version of nokia maps, and
- 0.0.8 for those who get strange results with the other two versions.

I wonder when someone will use Martin's work to code an alternative map loader... maybe an idea for the people at http://sourceforge.net ?

Re: Nokia Maploader

diablo, I don't think that is so easy without rev-engineering the loader, and/or using dlls from it.

Please remember that those lists are not generated from scratch, but sniffing what the Map Loader does (i.e. you need map loader installed).
