Just migrated from a C7 to a Lumia 710. Nice phone but what a poor effort by Nokia in dumping this half baked version of Drive and Maps on us. Maybe it's fine for those who have never enjoyed using the Symbian version, but personally, I am feeling I have been conned. If I had of realised what I was getting, I never would have bought the phone.
I am not criticising for the sake of it, and have always supported Nokia - they make great phones - but this, in my view, is almost dishonest. Not happy.

@BadtzBee
What aspect particularly irritates you as in Drive there is now ability to synchronise map "Favourites" provided "Online", although absense of "Safetyspots" and "Traffic updates" may irritate some users?

Thanks for the response. I just spent half an hour detailing the shortcomings (the 'irritants'as you suggest) of the WP7 Drive and Maps experience, and then lost it somehow. No matter. The shortcomings of Drive and Maps on WP7 are well documented, and no-one at Nokia (as far as I know) are trying to suggest otherwise - well, they couldn't, could they?
I am not asking for "yes, but ..." answers. I want to know if I can store favourites on my phone, if I can select them while offline and navigate to them from a strange (unvisited) part of town, if I can pick a favourite from Maps (offline) and get voice navigation, if I can be using Drive and add a location on the way to a destination....in other words, my question is; are Maps and Drive on WP7 going to be upgraded to match the Symbian^3 experience. If so, do you know when this is going to happen. If not, then I can look for alternatives.

Hi BadtzBee,
Thanks for your feedback and welcome to the forum!
Nokia Drive and Maps for Windows Phone are under active development. Both applications are written from the ground up and besides their name do not share any history with the Symbian variants. Features are constantly being added and updates are made available on a regular basis.
The suggestions you make are appreciated and have been forwarded to the team developing these applications.
Hope this helps, let us know if you have any further questions

Maps and the importance of offline

I read this 2 days before I bought my Lumia 710. Big disconnect between spin and reality. I am one ( of many,I would imagine) unhappy Nokia supporter. Thanks anyway.

Hi BadtzBee,
The article you refer to discusses Nokia Drive which uses pre-loaded maps and can be used offline. So his comments reflect the real world use of navigation software on Lumia Windows Phone.

Please! "Complete offline experience" and "can be used offline" are two completely different concepts. Yes, I have access to offline navigation in Drive, but only if the locations I want are also offline. Most of them are not. I cannot even navigate to my home unless I am online to access my favourites! I cannot navigate to my clients' addresses either. (I can from Maps, but that doesn't give me Voice Navigation.)
How this misrepresentation has not been labelled false advertising in this litigious age is anyone's guess. Me, I just want a straightforward answer to a simple question, "are Nokia Drive and Maps going to be upgraded to truly operate offline as they do in the previous versions, and as they are advertised?"

Hi BadtzBee,
As posted before, Both Nokia Drive and Nokia Maps for Windows Phone are under active development. Features are constantly added and updates appear on a regular basis.
Please provide us with the information on how you can't enter your clients addresses in Nokia Drive and navigate to them so we can forward this to the development team. Also if you find there are addresses or locations missing from map data you can use the map reporter service from NAVTEQ who supplies the map data for both applications.
Thanks for your feedback on this,
Kosh

"As posted before, Both Nokia Drive and Nokia Maps for Windows Phone are under active development. Features are constantly added and updates appear on a regular basis."
So is that a yes or a no to my question as to whether WP7 Drive and Maps will be updated to match the functionality of the other versions?
I'm pretty sure I've given you a good indication of what features I find lacking. Could you PLEASE do me the courtesy of giving a straightforward answer to my query. So far all I am getting from this discussion is doublespeak and vague feel good promises.
Look, at this point I really don't care if the answer is no, I just need to decide whether or not to invest any further in this platform. If you don't know, could you point me in the direction of someone at Nokia who does?

Hi BadtzBee,
While your feedback in this thread is appreciated I would like to refer you to the forum guidelines, especially this part of the guidelines:
Nokia does not comment on rumours or speculation concerning anything not officially announced by the company, and as such discussion of such matters on this forum is also not permitted.
What this means is that we, as moderators, can't give you any specific information unless it is officially announced by Nokia and that it is not allowed to speculate on a release date by posting to these forums.
All I can say is that the development team is made aware of the wishes and requests posted here and we do forward these as they come up. As previously indicated however we can't comment on progress or availability of implementation of these nor on a time frame for upcoming updates. So far however there have been regular updates which each have brought the Windows Phone and Symbian implementations closer together.
Hope this helps,
Kosh

Well, in that case I would like to join the people who want to see *completely* offline experience possible with Nokia Drive. I find it frustrating to have the map downloaded on my phone and I still can't use it offline.
If I only knew this before I bought my Lumia, I would have gone for something else. (My bad I didn't check it properly in advance....)
Nokia, PLEASE, make sure this feature is included ASAP!

Hi scorpita,
Thanks for posting and welcome to the forum.
Nokia Drive works in offline mode with preloaded maps. For the purpose of the app, which is turn by turn navigation, an active network connection is not needed except for a Wi-Fi connection when pre-loading selected maps and navigation voice.
Do make sure though you are using V2 of Nokia Drive by checking Options>About and select offline mode in Options>Settings>Connection 'Offline'
Hope this helps,

as a former X9 and N900 user i`m pretty disappointed by the state of Nokia Windows phone.. x9 was awesome for navigation and at first glance i just wondered why there need to be 2 or 3 maps apps on my nokia 710?? i mean why cant it just be one like on Symbian and have a rather good feature set instead of this.. i mean v2 of Nokia drive rather feels like a beta, its so basic.. i cant even set the simple options for navigation to not use highways or ferries.. and to be honest the offline navigation was reason No.1 to get a Nokia at all.. i dont even start on skype or other accounts integration on Windows phone, its so frustrating.. i just hope you guys get up to speed soon and start doing things right as it once was..

Dear Nokia, thanks for the completely offline navigation that I got with the update a couple of weeks ago. ![]()
Kosh, thanks for the quick reply although at the time you posted it I did not have V2 available.
Now, how about favourite places, options to prefer/avoid highways, etc; to choose between the shortest, quickest, etc. routes? Looking forward to V3....

Nokia maps is in urgent need of offline maps, like the older versions.
Even if you have a free data plan, it's way too slow to load all map data from the net instead of having it preloaded into the phone, especially when you're in a vehicle or in the countryside with bad network coverage.

It's been stated several times already that offline maps ARE available via Nokia Drive.

Nokia Drive is a good application for voice assisted navigation. It's definitely not a substitute for Nokia maps.
Main reasons:
A) There is no possibility to point to objects to get information about them.
B) No access to favourites.
C) No possibility to select a point on the map as goal for the trip, you have to know the name or adress and go all the way through searching for it.
D) Nokia Drive maps has much fewer POIs than Nokia Maps maps.
E) Nokia Drive doesn't even have the possibility to chose map orientation north up. If you're driving you certainly want the map to be orientated as you drive. But when assisting the driver with map reading, or when using some other kind of transport and want to see the map of the area around you, I don't want the map to roll around all the time, I want north up like an ordinary street map.
I still don't see the point of dividing the application into two.
