help with maps

HI Guys

I have the N8

I have 2 questions? Is it correct that the maps can work offline without internet connection, as I do not want to charge for data roaming.

Secondly

I am going to USA. Are the maps already on the phone or do I need to download it?

If so, where to download.

Do I use the Ovi Nokia suite to download or some other software? Can I download to my pc then use OVi suite to install on the phone.

I do not have a clue , I have been using Iphones for a while.

Please advise

Re: help with maps

Hi Yes, you can use maps without an internet connection.

In order to check if your phone has US maps I would have a look by  searching on the phone in Maps for places you wish to go to.

Otherwise there's sopme options for downloading - Ovi is one way via the PC or there is the latest maps you can download direct to the phone over wi-fi.(you may not have that though)

You would need both OVI Maps application set to "Offline" and in Menu > Settings > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning methods - only enable "Integrated GPS" to avoid any data costs although it may take quite a while to first lock on to position when you land in GPS without "Assisted GPS" feature to help.

A N8 supplied in the Eurozone won't have US Maps pre-installed, so as advised you either need to use OVI Suite > Maps or download OVI Maps v3.06 from Nokia Beta Labs here: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-06 sign in with your Nokia ID & password which as rich commented can utilise WLAN access point on N8 to download latest mapping detail.

Lastly it can complicate issue if your N8 still using OVI Maps v3.04 pre-installed if you haven't yet updated via OVI Suite > Tools > Software updates as this map set 00.01.25.114 is diffferent from the latest which is 00.02.41.123 which means existing pre-installed map data for Europe on mass memory of N8 would be deleted.

You can also use Roaming Guard to avoid internet connection. Roaming Guard monitors the application (MMS, E-mail, Web, Mail for Exchange, RoadSync, Skype, Ovi Maps, Assisted GPS and Other data) access to the internet and, according to selected settings, enables or denies this access. Roaming Guard is available on the Ovi Store for 1 EUR.
