tomtom mobile 7

I today have just telephoned tomtom and asked about navigator 7's compatibilty with the internal gps in the n95. They said yes it will definately be compatible and will use the internal gps device on the n95 but will not be released until either the last quater of 2007 ie now or the 1st quarter. yay at last!!!!!!!!

Re: tomtom mobile 7

Good to hear that allthough I've been using the nokia maps with a tomtom gps receiver and compared to the internal gps in the N95 the external one gives a faster lock and more precise positioning.

Re: tomtom mobile 7

i cant get on with the maps app built in with the n95. everything is too slow and the directions given just take me completely out of my way to get there.

Assuming TomTom will actually release this in 2007, this is real great to hear. Finally I can give my Bluetooth GPS receiver to my girlfriend ;-).

People who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.

Is that with AGPS turned on or off? If I use Nokia Maps with AGPS turned on it takes about 15 seconds to get a fix.
If I turn on my Bluetooth GPS (I normally don't do this, it's constantly charged in my car, so I don't need to turn it off) and wait for it to get a fixed this will take minutes. Unless you have a GPS receiver which stores it's last known location, I don't think it can beat the AGPS feature.

Firstly let me tell you the route that I travelled over the weekend. I left Belfast in Northern Ireland on Friday afternoon .I arrived in Scotland in the port of Stranraer and travelled to Pontefract then to Newark then to Scunthorpe and then back to Stranraer on Saturday night.

NOKIA MAPS
When using Nokia maps with the external gps (tomtom) it kept crashing and was never able to keep a conection for more than 5 minutes .
Using Nokia Maps with the N95 internal Gps took anywhere from 1- 5 mins to get a fix.More stable but it kept losing the satelite fix and had me travelling through fields etc .
Also was not impressed with the English voice I dont need to hear " Follow the course of the road for x miles"A warning 400 - 800 meters is more than enough .

GOOGLE MAPS

I was quite impressed with this even though it did not have any voice navigation. It managed to keep a good fix on where I was and over the course of 2 hours it only crashed once.
I would be concerned about the charges that would be incured by constantly downloading map data .
If you could download maps and a navigation system I think this could be a good system. I think this has potential and will keep an eye on it to see where Google take it next.

TOMTOM NAVIGATOR 6

This is my system of choice.
It works , you can search for postcodes, its accurate(has to be when you drive a HGV) Traffic info is accurate and easy to understand. Tomtom has thought about it and made it very easy to use . You can set this system up and use it in 20 mins maximum .Only problem I have found with it in the N95 is that you cant change between horizontal and landscape modes and you cant rotate the screen so that you can use the keypad when in horizontal mode.

These are only my opinions - I tell it how I find it .
I know others think differently - thats OK by me.

Re: tomtom mobile 7

Hi lil_2pac

Don't hold your breath on this issue as market has been altered by Nokia acquiring Smart2Go and in some respects they could now be said to be a business competitor to TomTom.
With the widespread abuse of their activation process and consequent lack of revenue, there is no longer much incentive for TomTom to support Symbian versions.

If I've helped in any way, a click upon the white kudos star would always be appreciated.

Re: tomtom mobile 7

There is certainly nothing coming from tomtom from the people I have asked (various people at tomtom, not just support).

The last update for symbian (and windows mobile) was Febuary 2007. Safe enough to assume tomtom do not intend to support symbian further IMO.

However, there are other satnav packages that work with the internal GPS:

Navicore

Copilot (new version due out in April - I have found it quite good so far)

Navigon

Garmin XT

Sygic (due out soon, but not recommended as its very buggy)

Nokia maps (obviously).

Not to mention various over the air only packages (amaze, wayfinder etc).

Don't expect anything. I enjoyed a presentation from someone at TomTom and the question was asked. Delivering software to the mobile market isn't their core business and costs them a lot. Not only in development. This is done pretty smart and can be 'ported' to different platforms. The costs are in the illegal usage.

And for other solutions. I've played with Garmin and it is nice. I like the way it zooms out when you don't have to make any turns for a while. The UI sucks.

I also participated in a beta test of Sygic McGuider. This one has potential. It uses the same maps as TomTom does (TomTom owns Tele Atlas) and it would be great if Sygic would use more stuff from TomTom to make the software even better. The UI isn't as nice as TomTom in the ease of use but it looks great and is better compared to Garmin. Further more, the navigation view uses lane assist. Really nice feature. I think Sygic good be a good alternative to TomTom. I assume we will see the final version somewhere this year.

Tomttom are doing a version for the iphone. They have also done a version for the HTC diamond (Windows mobile). And others have apperently got that working on other WM devices.

You think that they would release it as a general software release, Im sure some of the people hacking are more than willing to buy it if it was available!

So that just leaves symbian, but theres no news at all on that front. I suspect nokia are somehow blocking them, since Nokia now fully own symbian.

And obviously they want their own mapping software to be more popular. Even though its **bleep**, in its current form. Roll on 3, and I hope its got all the fixes people want.

Unfortunatly Sygic isnt that good, it has a lot of fundenmental flaws in navigation. And its sygic, not the maps that are a problem. They need to go a very long way before I choose them over Garmin.

Garmin are releasing an updated version soon, with a new UI. Which has me very excited tbh, because Garmin is my one of choice, dispite the UI being rather horrible.

Go here to see a few of the new Garmin UI shots: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73458
