How do you turn on Nokia Lumia 822 sensor?

I am in the middle of a call and it was working earlier when I held the phone to my face but now its not? Could I have accidently turned it off or something?

Perhaps you are not activating the sensor at the correct location. It is usually at the top and next to the front camera. You should be able to see if if you hold it up to the light.
