My Nokia Lumia 920 screen goes blank, when I make or answer a phone call.. When the call is terminated, the screen comes back to live again. If i press the on/off button a few times, the phone call screen appears - but only for a split second.
Would appreciate help to solve this problem.

@Grahn
Proximity sensor is supposed to black out screen during call to prevent you ear inadvertently activating on screen functions.

Thanks, but it goes blank no matter if I hold it close to my ear or place it on a table. The problem is that I cannot terminate a call, because the buttons do not display - and the screen does not react, when I press it.
I can only force a split second view of the telephone screen by pressing the on/off button repeatedly.

@Grahn
Several posts in a similar vein to yours and for some users an accumulation of dust has exacerbated this state as here:http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Proxim

Thanks for pointing me to this thread, which I will follow from now..
I am glad that I am not alone with this problem and beg with the rest of you that Nokia gets their fingers out in a hurry.
They are fighting to get back in the cellphone market - and truly the Lumia 920 was a very good shot until this showstopper turned up.

having the same issue. called Nokia customer support 3 weeks ago and was told this was not a known issue. after I completed a full factory reset the isssue continues.... I was looking forward to my 920 vs. the iPhone..... hopefully they will fix the issue soon

Did you check the link posted above ? And also have a look at THIS ..

i was able to fix the issue by blowing (HARD) air into the space between the top of the screen and the case.

Had the same problem and finally figured it out. The screen protector was affecting the sensor in the upper right corner enough to cause the phone to think it was being covered. Like when it's up against your face during a call. Peeled the screen protector back from the upper corner and the screen came back on. Must've had a smudge or something caught on the the sticky side of film. Woo hoo! Good as new!

Keep it simple works...blow HARD the dust/dirt out of the area near the sensor. Mine returned to normal after having the same problem and trying the same fixes that didn't work.

I had this twice - once because the proximity sensor was masked just a little bit by the back cover I was using and then the sensor was covered by the screen film. Changed both of those and it is now fine.

Proximity sensor is probably obstructed with dust. Just blow at the top of the phone, where the screen meets the casing. I had the same issue and this fixed it.

Even if the issue is related to dust, I have to say the answer is not satisfactory. I'd had my phone for only 3 days. Usage was light, no screen protector or case, carried it in my jeans pocket, etc. I got the phone on a Saturday, got my first call and had the exact same issue!
I finally found these threads on the Nokia site and we're told to just blow on the phone? Really? I tried it last night, the screen came back on for 10 seconds or so, I was trying to look up something on Google, then screen died again. I was wearing earphones and it still kept doing it. Finally after putting it on speakerphone I was able to get it to stay turned on. I also tried the wiping of the screen method, same results.
This is really disappointing.

Hello everyone!
I have the same problem and it happens when either I,m calling or being called!
I cant see what this has to do with dust as mine is 100% clean
It seems like a software problem related to calling function!

Because I’m in sales, I use my Lumia 920 constantly throughout the day. The only issue I have is the screen going dark during calls. It’s so aggravating not to be able to get to the controls or being able to hank up after a call.
I’ve tried the blowing method with little and unpredictable results. If you are around other people it’s easy to feel stupid. You get a lot of - “what are you doing?”
The method that’s worked for me is the Pinch-N-Swipe. Pinch Nokia as you swipe your thumb to the left or the right. Gently at first, than harder if you have to.
Now when I’m around friends and coworkers I make it seem like it’s a fancy feature of the phone to hide my embarrassment. As in – this phone is so cool that in order to see the controls or hang up, you have to rub the brand like a Jennie Lamp.
Nokia you have a great phone. We are your ambassadors. Deliver us from frustration and social critique. Make us proud to hold your product.
In other words – FIX THIS THING!

I agree with the previous poster. This is a major issue with the phone - its almost impossible to hang up from a call. Frankly,
if the issue isn't fixed soon, my phone is going back.
Nokia - if there is no easy way to fix this issue, please release a patch urgently to disable the proximity detector (if this is the issue).

Same issue is happening with me. Nokia needs to fix this now. I'd recommend they provide instructions to clean the dust from behind the front facing camera.
