I'm encountering the exact same problem. When in a noisy area I have difficulties having a phone conversation because I can't hear them very well while with phones from friends in that same area I hear them just fine.
Nokiyes, if you run for president I will vote for you. Well written. You will get no response. No answer. Or you will get the answer...."please update to 8.1" and if you do "we currently not support 8.1"
VOLUME BOOSTER NOKIA. JAILBREAK. YOU WILL SELL AS CRAZY.
Same low levels for me since long time ago. I've had plenty of defects with my device, wrote plenty of feedbacks took surveys... but people, Nokia is fading away. No support, no respect for the people which made the mistake to buy their products.
Hi Mod/Admin of this topic,
Very supprise that there are a lot of same describes from customer and you are doing nothing and just go around and keep silent.
I tried to search a lot of forum to find out this issue of your 1020 volume and yes, a lot.
Why you didt response properly, rather than ask simple questions as customers saw, or you dont have your answer. You want to know how my feeling this time: angry to responsed guys of this topic.

We understand your honest feedback, guys. Though your phones are having the same volume issue, we still need to further isolate each case. If all troubleshooting steps mentioned in the previous messages (rebooting, resetting, recovering the phone's SW, etc.) didn't work, the best option is to visit the local Nokia Care Point to have your Lumias evaluated. In that way, the technicians will be able to personally assess the phone and verify the possible cause of the issue. This link will lead you to the Nokia global support page: Way Finder - Nokia.
BTW, it's best to back up your files first before having the phone evaluated to avoid data loss. Just go to Settings > Backup to enable it.
Let us know if you need further help.
Yes, I can verify that the call volume is really much lower than the other 1520 which I'm using too. With the same 10/10 volume level, 1020 is much lower and harder to listen to conversations. Same network and tested in the same environment and area.
As least I hear your voice. And sorry that this is not our waiting responsed. It's not a personal issue, it can not be sovled by any technical guy, it came from every 1020 you sell everyday - it's system issue, please.
How tecnical guy can help 1020 buyer, change new one? you think it will fix this issue or just a way to put issue from Nokia to local one?
What we wait is an update on cyan which can solve it by confirmed, not else, please.
