Re: Flashing N900

sorry.. long post held me up.

Ok

First lets make sure your phone is happy..

Can you turn your phone off and unplug it from PC

Open keyboard
press and hold U button down
plug into PC
keep U button pressed for 10 seconds

Does the phone vibrate once
Does the screen stay dark
Does a dark Nokia logo appear
Does a dark USB icon appear top left
Does the phone stay like this after you let go of the U button, seemingly forever (rather than lighting up)

Can you reply back with yes/no answers for each question

Re: Flashing N900

Ok... good stuff..

How do you feel about flashing using vmware? Here's the list of instructions

1) download the software:

Vmware: https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=player&lp=1

7zip: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/sevenzip/7z913-x6 4.msi

WinSCP: http://winscp.net/download/winscp427setup.exe

Flasher image: http://chris.intrepid.cx/N900/flasherubuntu.7z

2) Download the firmware

Visit http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php

Download the EMMC image:

RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin

Rename the file to "emmc"

Download the OS image: There are 5 files that all start RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1 Pick the right file for your area.. Rename this file to "os"

3) Install 7zip, winscp and vmware player

4) reboot

5) find flasherubuntu.7z, right click, select 7zip -> open

6) drag "flasher ubuntu" folder onto the desktop.. it starts to extract..

7) Close 7zip app

8) Open flasher ubuntu folder on desktop, open Ubuntu 9.10 folder inside:

9) Open the Ubuntu 9.10 virtual machine file (the one highlighed) Take ownership:

10) Select "moved"

11) Wait for virtual machine to boot up.. press the n900 icon at the top of the screen

12) Proceed to install flasher tool (accept licenses use the tab and arrow keys).. The select option 5 from the menu

13) Launch winscp and log into the virtual machine. Use the IP address (circled in red above) as the hostname, use upload as the username and n900 as the password..

14) Drag the emmc image and os bin files from tablets-dev.nokia.com into winscp:

Re: Flashing N900

Which bit is worrying you? I can go through it step by step.. it looks like a lot, but compared to some of the hacky stuff that goes on on this forum its quite tame :smileyhappy:

The first 4 steps are installing the software you'll need.. vmware, winscp 7zip

Steps 5 to 10 are starting the vmware image (this is the linux system that will flash the phone)

Steps 11 to 14 are copying the firmware you downloaded onto the linux machine (so it can flash them)

After that, its a menu to flash it!!
Asides from downloading, I recon it could be done in about 10 minutes!

Re: Flashing N900

Promise you'll be fine..

the most dangerous bit is in step 3.. install vmware.. mainly because you'll have to reboot your pc.. other than that there is next to no risk to your pc or phone..

Put it this way,, if you flashed gibber onto your phone (which is surprisingly difficult to do) you could still reflash and fix it

we can go through step by step to make sure you're happy..

Re: Flashing N900

Ok, next thing is to download the firmware for the phone...

Go to http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php

You need to download two files..

First download the emmc file: RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin
It's 8th in the list

Once you have downloaded this file, rename it to emmc

Now download the OS file. you need the right file for your region.. There are 5 files all labeled "PR 1.2 version 10.2010.19-1"

Download the right one (USA, MidEast/North Africa, UK or rest of world.. don't download the Indian one)
Once you have that file, rename it to os

Re: Flashing N900

Turn phone off.. press and hold U.. plug phone into USB port and keep U pressed until you see the dark USB icon

Now on the vmware app, you should see a USB icon at the bottom of the screen, click on that and select connect

Inside the vmware session, click the n900 icon at the top of the screen and it should take you back to that text menu

select option 1..

it should run and give you some info about your phone.. OR it will hang and say "waiting for suitable device"
