GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

Hello,

since a few weeks now, my N9 cannot get connected to a GPS signal.

I checked some settings, reboot several times the N9, install Gpsmeefo apps... without success.

I even restarted the nped session  ;

# devel-su
# /sbin/stop xsession/nped
# /sbin/start xsession/nped

I dumped the /var/log/syslog and it is showing some errors ;

Nov 12 17:47:49 (2012) nped[1349]: nped stopped
Nov 12 17:47:49 (2012) nped[1349]: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/nped: munmap_chunk(): invalid pointer: 0x44f4f9e0 ***

Nov 12 17:48:17 (2012) nped[5540]: GLIB DEBUG ConIc - con_ic_connection_connect_by_id(0x1a5010, [ANY], 1)

After digging on the forum, I have no clue...

Kind regards

@alexandraKa

Have you thought of trying re-installing existing device software with Nokia Suite upon your PC?

There can certainly be issues inside vehicle if charging device in some car-holders.

Install Nokia Suite upon PC from here:http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/support/product/nokia-suite/

If you go to Tools > Software Updates - you should get this screen:

@alexandraKa

You have the option "réinstaller" to replace existing device software in case of any possible software corruption, as last update probably FOTA update to PR1.3

Re: GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

Sorry, I did not saw the link...

I tried to update the software, but it keeps telling me that "Nokia Suite is busy".

I rebooted my PC, the connection works (bluetooth)

Do you have any idea if the problem is on my side or on the website side ?

thank you again for your support

Kind regards

I would never try to carry out device software installation via Bluetooth and don't know whether you have an available USB to microUSB cable, or whether this responsible perhaps.

Re: GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

The USB cable that is normally given with the phone works ? I only have this one. But anyway, I was able to synchronise the N9 with my PC via bluetooth.

I will retry tonight with the usb cable.

Re: GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

@alexandraKa

Have you at any stage used reset "Clear" device after backing up essential data as instructed upon Page 101 of User Guide?http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/Nokia_N9_UG_en.pdf

The fact that GPSInfo application can now read data makes me wonder whether there is still some corrupt data value remaining upon your N9, without there being anything intrinsically wrong with device.

At the end of the day have to accept that GPS acquisition upon N9 poor in relation to Symbian devices if not used for a period of days. However I have found if position acquired using Bluetooth external GPS receiver to kick start device it seems happy to accept data from internal GPS when Bluetooth switched off!

Hello,

I followed the procedure (Reset > Clear device). Still not working...

What is strange, is some applications where still there. Therefore I have some doubts about the restoring of the factory settings.

Is there a way, through a flashing process to retrieve EXACTLY the original system image ?

Kind regards

Re: GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

@alexandraKa

Sorry I have run out of ideas, error logs don't mean much and extracts from mine don't seem quite the same order and only one mention of loading "BCM4751 GPS driver" Although GPSMeefo, Maps and Drive all opened can't recognise any entries or trying to poll postioning server = supl.nokia.com

Re: GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

Thank you very much for your support.

I think there are 3 options : a software problem, a hardware problem, or an external problem.

-I can try to solve the external problem by trying to synchronise with an external GPS (but I have no idea how to proceed).

-For the software problem, it is possible to compare the files (for instance compare your nped files and my files).

-For a hardware failure... god please save our souls...

What do you think about this ?

Kind regards

Have you come across Post #2 by reinob here as syslog attached in this thread bears some similarity?http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1291864

Hello,

here is my syslog

There is the same message than in the reference you gave me ;

nped[8649]: i2c_write: Remote I/O error

I already performed the full reflash (as mentioned above)...

In addition, here are some files I was able to find in the system. Maybe some of them are corrupted.

Does anyone has a N9 with a working GPS ? Then we could compare the files.. ?

Kind regards

Alexandra

@alexandraKa

Sorry personally I am not competent enough to interpret your attached syslog, although ceroberts75 upon the forum probably is. The only comment that I would make is that there are a lot of GLIB CRITICAL ** entries, whatever that implies.

Re: GPS unable to lock signal (defective GPS ?)

hmm. I am not much for searching through those either...nor at this time the time to do so! :/ sorry.

but looking at your flash information, it sounds/looks to me like you didn't flash it correctly. if you still have resident applictions on your device after the flash, then it is not completely flashed to factory state.

while I cannot help you directly with the information to flash on this site...it is apparent that you know how to get the firmware, and you must already know about http://wiki.maemo.org/Flashing_N9

looks like you did a comprehensive reset though I see a lot of skips....

try doing the zeroize device reset.

also, BE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT YOU ARE GETING FIRMWARE THAT MATCHES YOUR DEVICE ORIGIN CODE. (there is one caviate to this and that is so long as it has the same memory size ie-16/64gb and color. though there is not guarantee there)

try that, it will take a loooong while as it is format the entire drive so if you have a 64gb device, may be a while....

then, install nothing after. just connect to wifi and do any update for the firmware rom. when done, then launch nokia maps and wait

report back here after.
