I received my NEW N900 today. However I'm unssure about a few things I've done & whether they will have caused a problem or not. The phone is sim free unlocked & accepted my 02 payg sim. The first things done were to use the bluetooth 5800 switcher application to send my contacts, notes, calendar entries to the N900.
The original factory install version was according to this latest log string.
SW version: 2.2009.51.1_18:00:39.610 ENO SW version: RX-51_2009SE_2.2009.51-1_PR_MR0 18:00:39.610.
I used the latest OVI Suite to update my phone. The very first time I connected my phone to OVI Suite was to do a backup of original firmware. OVI installed the latest Nokia firmware which is showing up now as version 20.2010.36-2 on N900. So I am presuming the first version was 2.2009.51-1.
But While the Nokia N900 was updating I went to have dinner & I must have not followed any prompts at some point because I came back their was a red exclamation mark & Nokia said their was a timout & phone was disconnected firmware update was done but I had to plug phone reconnect it & do restore restore some other data inc contacts & something.
But after checking my phone everything that was their in the first place was still there. So their was only one difference I noticed. The applications & games that were preloaded were not in a More shortcut at the bottom of the menu but all in the main menu. I don't think anything is different.
Some of my questions are: Should I have installed the latest nokia firmware or is there a meamo firmware update which I should of done which would be better.
I found out that I can't add more than one packet data connection only wireless under settings. But now Internet aswell as making/receiving calls & SMS messages is good to go. I'm happy their. Also GPS seems to work without the need to setup a data packet connection like we had to do on my 5800. This is a good job because I can only edit a data packet connection but can't add one. I can only add a wireless connection as I say.
I found out that when I click on Foreca Weather. it say Preparing for installation please wait. Then it show uninstall, download, update for a short period of time until a error message appears & says unable to download `foreca-weather-applet`. Application package not found.
When I click download it sys application package partially refreshed. Some catalogues unavailable. Check catalogue details. When I check catalogue details. Failed catalogues are Nokia Applications, Nokia System Software Updates, Ovi. If I click Nokia applications, it says in a red link https://downloads.meamo.nokia.com/fremantle/ssu/ap
Also their is no Multi media messaging. Also I can't give contacts a different ringtone. Can anyone offer any help into the problems I'm having. I haven't tried any other apps. I've only added the mediaplayer widget & Internet shortcut.
Many thanks for any replies.

Thankyou very much professor! Hope you don't mind I have some more questions. Having linux meamo I don't want to install anything that might screw the nokia install. I'm stepping on new ground & meamo is different from Symbian S60 5th I'm used to. I nearly weeped over things missing from meamo & nearly sent my phone back until i realized all options & settings for apps like the web browser are there but hidden. But what a welcome change.
So you say I have the PR1.3 firmware which is the latest nokia firmware. I feel much better that I can get an MMS app for the phone. I hope the catalogue does sort itself out. N900 had a first nights10 hours charge. Haeven't switched it on yet. I'll let you know if the catalogue is sorted or not.
Q1. My 02 sim had connection 02 Mobile Web data bearer settings showing on N900. However that wouldn't allow me to connect to Internet on N900. It allowed voice & data calls but not internet.
So I changed this connection to the 02 Internet Access point on my 5800 which is named as 02 Active. I put in the 02 Active settings & Internet still wouldn't work. i nearly gave up.
Then when I entered the different connection name, access point name & username for the WAP services - 02 WAP GPRS into my N900 from Nokia 5800. It worked.
But why are 02 payg users limited to using WAP. How do I use the fastest data connection of GPRS or 3G etc..
Q2. Is there a way to assign ringtones to contacts?
Q3. There aren't many widgets showing in the desktop edit mode?
Q4. How do I get foreca weather working? it just pulls up that error in my last post?
Well thanks for helping. Talk soon!

Ok turned phone on first time this morning & couldn't get into menu from home screen. It kept dissapearing & then where the menu button is in top left corner looked screwed up. I could see pixels dots different colous. Then it tried opening Email but I have no email accounts setup. I just turned it off after a few tries. I could scroll across the desktop.

Thoss catalogues still failed. And foreca won't install!

First power on this morning after 10 hour charge over night. The blue men key on dektop didn't work. Funny colour pixel issue. Because there was no response I kep clicking it a few times & then it tried opening email but said no email acount. I have no email setup anyway. Okay. Turned phone back on again & desktop Main menu shortcut is working fine.
The big problems I have is worrying about what the OVI Suite told me which I can't remember that the firmware update was done but I had to restore restore something else. Which turned out to be there already. The main issue is I don't know what state or condition my phone is in.
All I know is thatI can't setup a data packet connection but i could edit hte one installed from sim card which was incorrect. I had to change it to wap service settings copied from 5800 phone. I can't do MMS. I can't assign contact ringtones. The application manager. Clicking download button is giving errors. The application list partially refreshed. Some catalogues unavailable. Check catalogue details. Nokia Applications, Nokia System Software Update, Ovi.
Also these catalogue issues haven't sorted themselves out. Not sure what to do now but to give you details of what's installed on this phone in the uninstaller.

I've solved the aplication manager problem. I figured out how to disable the catalogues. Shut down phone. Re boot. Then enable them & try updating again. Also I don't know if this made any difference. But my connections was set to always ask rather than use any connection.
Now the Foreca Weather widget is successfully installed. YEE.
There is one other update which is asking dfor installation. OVI installer (1) Documents to go Installer 1.0-4.2+0m5 11kb. Is this ok to install? Alok Mishra is the maintainer. I didn't install it. Biut now I've clicked on the doc to go shortcut in main menu its now asking to install a different documents to go viewer edition. Ver 1.0.153. Is this what meamo does randomly give you diff choices dif apps.
Thanks

The Documents to Go *Installer* (whatever version) does just that, it *installs" Documents to Go (whatever version, obviously unrelated to the installer as such ![]()
In short: don't worry. Or just worry about what the full version of Documents to Go will cost you (what you get from the installer is a trial version).
I'm happy that your issues with the app. mgr. are now resolved, so you can start enjoying your N900! (I also bought mine about 4 weeks ago, I'm loving it -- except for the e-mail client, I was really spolied by Profimail on my E75 ![]()

ok, since you just got it....
i would make sure you have a clean install, since you tried to do it through ovi suite...which is not good.
follow my directions for flashing HERE
be sure that you flash the OS and the Vanilla (EMMC) of your device.
after you are done, open set up your email, and then click on the next link(s) with your device.
then use THIS POST to help you easily install the repos to your device.
after that is done, open your application manager and install
rootsh
close application manager, and then, if you want to save time, open the x-terminal.
type the following in sequence and hit enter/return on your kb after each line.
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install fmms (this is for MMS) you can get instructions for setting it up HERE & HERE
apt-get install fapn (this will give you a GUI to create a GPRS connection
apt-get install per-contact-ringtones (this will allow you to add custom ringtones)
apt-get install foreca-weather-applet (this is the foreca weather applet. you can alos get the OM Weather)
apt-get install optimizen900 (this will allow you to reset all your device like doing a reboot without killing your battery)
apt-get install optimizen900-pm (this will make it so that you just tap the power button and use the optimizen900)
and, if you want to make it really easy, just do this:
open xterm
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install fmms fapn per-contact-ringtones foreca-weather-applet optimizen900 optimizen900-pm
i think that will be a good start for you.

Olá, como vai você ceroberts75.
Thanks for the help. The firmware didn't get screwed up I don't think. Just certain PIM or media songs videos etc. The calendar entries, some film trailers didn't go over. Contacts, notes, all there.
Everything works like a dream now. Application Manager issues were solved. I disabled the catalogues & do a reboot. Enable catalogues & download update manager started working.
Also I managed to download Foreca Weather, Documents to go, 1.3.3 fMMS. I really haven't had any other issues that would make me question the Meamo install.
I have the 02 wap settings connection set to "use any connection". The Web, downloads & everything works like OVI Store Beta I can send MMS through 02 ok, make receive SMS, voice calls etc.. SMS is pretty basic, simple but is excellent & works great. I noticed add recipient, txt, smiley & send. Settings are pretty basic you can't change the col of text, font, & other format tools, but you get these in the sketch!
The only thing I can't do is assign ringtones to contacts. Because I'm new to linux I'm not familiar with the way you do things. I have noticed that you have asked me to use the X-Terminal. But most of the Apps have been downloaded via the app manager downloads thus far.
Is their a reason for using the command line? If so I would like to try the instructions you gave for
sudo gainroot
apt-get update
apt-get install fmms fapn per-contact-ringtones foreca-weather-applet optimizen900 optimizen900-pm
only I have fMMS & Foreca already so can I enter only the apps I need in command line? don't know whether I need other packet data connections. Using 02 wap, could I be using a better faster connection?
Here is a list of all apps installed on my N900, can you explain to me if everything here all correct or missing ceroberts75? Thanks. Here goes...

So as far as I can tell Please tell me what to be looking for if I'm supposed to be getting some errors due you saying that OVI Suite might not have installed the firmware. It was the latest version OVI Suite 3.0.0.290. But the firmware installed correctly though.
I think I might use phone for a while unless you say there are things missing o that shouldn't be there. As far as I know I have tried everything & they work apart from some Internet radio stations which won't buffer & play, but that's prob normal & means the stream os down or something.
I appreciate all the help given here. Thank you very much to everyone who has taken their time to contribute to my cause. (I know I'm not the only one) who expresses a big thanks.
Meamo is so different to what I'm used to but I'm loving it & I won't leave it. I want to learn more, the cloud is just going to be one BIG huge Advertising piece of bloatware so I glad I didn't invest in Android. Symbian too old looking but really functional, capable which is what I always wanted. Something that didn't look to good on the GUI but did what you wanted it to do it had extensive support fudamentally!
Thanks guys
