I know about that command. It makes it look pretty new but it does not do what I am asking
e.g.
It will not delete any of my email accounts
It will not delete my weather settings
It will not delete my bookmarks
It will not deletely my photos...
I could go on. But basically any user created content is not affected. Only the phone is restored to its "default settings" as the command itself suggests.

or check this link, long process for N900
https://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware
Windows [edit] N900 (XP)
MS Windows users willing to update the N900 can use the Nokia Software Updater or see the Flasher documentation.
It is also possible to flash the N900 directly without using the Nokia Software Updater (NSU). This is handy when you would like to flash the device with the same firmware that is already installed on the N900. The NSU will update only if there is a version newer than the one installed on the device.
To flash direcly from the XP command line, follow these steps:
cd "c:\Program Files\maemo\flasher-3.5"
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_1.2009.42-11_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
The update will take about 4 minutes after which the N900 will reboot and display the Welcome screen with Regional settings.

the only way to do a hard reset is to flash your device as said in previous posts
btw there is no 4-button trick for N900, that one is for N97 not N900

I have done this but i am now not able to install many apps,
such as the amazon one that comes on the n900,
when half way through the install it displays 'unable to install'
any help would be apriciated
the whole point of the n900 was to install 3rd party software,
i may have to return it to nokia.
Thank you for any help
btw is there anyway to wipe everything from the system from inside xterminal i just want to start from scatch which is what i thought a reflash would do.
2009-11-30 10:48
you can try to repeat what you did, maybe something went wrong
i have not tried this just a thought
and of course you can always return it to nokia and they will reflash it for you
2009-11-30 10:57
i have reflashed 7 or 8 times now it still wont let me install these apps.
there are not any nokia centres round here, and if i have to send it back to nokia i wont get it back for ages like my n97.

try this one or 3rd party
In the app manager on the phone, click the top then click "application catalogues". Select the maemo extras on, tick enable and click save. You'll get access to a LOT more apps.

I've have all the repositorys.
Don't worry!
The guys over at maemo.org helped me out,
It was flash file I was using causing the proble.
Thanks for all the help though.

i turned off the bluetooth on my n900
after a while i turned on the bluetooth but it isn't turning on
and the device name bar isn't saving...
can you please tell me what is the problem?
thanks my e-mail is jaijun_young@hotmail.com

Hi Jai1590
First off try these tricks, see how you get on.
Go to your Bluetooth settings, tap devices and then delete the LG device, if it's in the list.
If that doesn't work.
Power down the N900 and remove the battery for 5 minutes, then put everything back together and power up.

what factory reset? do you mean restore original settings? you can't "factory reset" the n900 without using software on a pc...
the password is the security code.. check the user guide, but i think the default is 12345..
restoring original settings might speed up your phone, but I wouldn't put money on it.. flashing your phone will wipe it clean..
remember, this phone is not a windows machine.. I don't think mine is any slower now than it was last November when I bought it.. and I've not restored original settings, or flashed it clean..
it could be something else.. like 3G speed?

I updated software to version 20.2010.36-2.203.1 on my n900. It hangs always i cant even tap on MENU and access any of these folder/ applications/ music/videos. I have decided to Restore to Original settings it is asking LOCK CODE which iam totally not aware of. I did not set any lock to my mobile i believe it default one. I use vodafone. Can anyone help me with this please...?
