Re: memory card and n900

Have you checked the magnet under the stand.. Sometimes the magnet falls out.. If you pull open the stand, you should see a rectangular dip.. there should be a little magnet wedged in there.. if it is missing, it means getting a new back.. or bodging with something

I'm investigating a kernel patch.. see if we can convince it to ignore the back cover for mmc/microsd stuff..

Re: memory card and n900

hey Chris

I have lost the magnet and now My N900 start playing with camera apps and as you mentioned it does not recognise my MMC. it was perfectly alright before. Can you please help me how to work around it or can I get magnet from somewhere.

Thanks

Re: memory card and n900

I've not be able to figure out yet if the MMC magnetic sensor is a hard or soft feature..

Does it physically disable the MMC port in hardware, and the OS is forced to obey, or is it merely a signal that causes the OS to release the MMC device?

That being said, I've not looked particularly hard :smileytongue:

there are a few places (I'm lead to believe) that sell replacement back covers.. but another popular solution is a bit of a bodge.. using a rubber magnet (think fridge magnet) one of the ones that is flexible and thin like rubber..

These flat rubber magnets can be cut into a suitable small blob and wedged into the hole.. That should be enough to keep the MMC sensor happy, even if it won't keep the kick stand in place..

This site seems to sell a replacement cover for €15 which isn't bad!

I've got a few flexible magents stuck to the fridge at home, can whack one in the post if that'd help!

Re: memory card and n900

Thanks a lot Chris. Thats a good idea i will try getting that flexible magnets you get for small white boards and cut it into small piece and then let you know if that works.
and thanks for the offer to post Chris but I am in Australia buddy and not worth sending. thanks anyways. no wonder you the best.
please accept my kudos for your support

Re: memory card and n900

ah! Man, I'm losing it.. I thought you were local (UK) urgh.. sorry :smileyhappy:

I'm between workstations at home.. I've just bought a new PC (first time I've bought a desktop since 2002 I think) anyway, I'm getting ready to do some more substantial dev work .. both on Maemo and MeeGo.. but I just need a quiet weekend to get sorted.. fingers crossed that might be this weekend.. especially if the 2nd processor part turns up this week!

I'll do some more kernel patch investigation work then.. and if I spot something, I might suggest it to Titan for incorporation into his overclocking uber kernel.. perhaps a system setting to assume the sensor is open / closed / automatic.. A little desktop widget might be handy too..

Re: memory card and n900

Hi together,

I was searching of some solution, because I have exactly the same probs. The magnet is attached, but the N900 does not react on it. I checked with the dmesg .... and it shows me that there is no back cover (see a bough).

OK, my N900 was falling down. But after that I could make some photos and store it on the memory card. After a wile this stops working and the cover was not recognized anymore. I tried it with different MMC (1GB, 4GB). But now I know where the probs are coming from. It would be nice to have a solution, a work-a-round or or disabling of the back cover.

I am thinking of a little app for enabling / disabling the MMC or something like that.

Thanks for any work and good luck.

Having read this thread I tried the dmesg mmc0 command and go ""cover is open, card is now inaccessible". I checked the magnets and they looked ok but I swapped covers from another N900 that I knew worked ok.  Even with this other cover I still got "cover is open, card is now inaccessible" and could not access the SD card.

Any other ideas appreciated?

Re: memory card and n900

I just concluded that It is not a problem of the Nokia N900 Memory Card Slot (Hardware) and is rather a memory card problem. I tired the following.

I had two memory Micro SD cards 4GB (from my previous Nokia N79) and an idle 128MB card. The 4GB cards works perfectly on N79 but is not recognized by my N900 or even my PC. But the 128MB card is recognized by both my N900 and the PC as well. Hence this is just a memory card issue and must be related to the internal formation/partition of the memory card. I even tried formating the 4GB card on N79 and still it still didn't worked on my N900. I am thinking to rather buy a new SD card now  :/

Re: memory card and n900

Hey there!

Cpitchford, i dont know how much i can beg you to work on a kernel patch to tell the phone to disregard the status of the back cover!

I really need the MMC to work, Nitdroid, Meego, everything awesome needs that damn thing and it wont even read!!!

I would do it myself but i dont have enough experience :/

ALTHOUGH you can alter the gconf and basically manually control whether the phone thinks the cover is on or not. It still didnt pick up my memory card, but the camera shutter was working, so i guess it was semi working?

Despite this, Dmesg still reported that the mmc was missing, so this could say that Dmesg or the phone in general doesnt rely on gconf to determine whether the cover is on or not.

But things like the camera use gconf.

But i think the best/only way to get round this is a kernel patch, i mean i dont know how legendary you would be if you could do it, and id be willing to help in any way i can :smileyhappy:

p.s. i know the drill :smileytongue: Checked the magnet, checked this and that and it is actually a raped sensor on the mobo!

Re: memory card and n900 FIXED!!!

Had same problem. Hardware fault on the cover sensor - NOT missing magnet.

Fixed it with attached.

DISCLAIMER - READ FIRST AND CONSIDER: I am not a programmer; I like to tinker. YMMV.

My phone is running kernel-power49 - the module was compiled accordingly. I have no idea whether it will work with other kernels including the default (couldn't see any difference in the source but I can't guarantee it). Please don't blame me if it bricks your phone! :smileymad:

After messing about for hours editing and recompiling kernels, I discovered that you only need one module.

****Rename attached file to omap_hsmmc.ko (forum wouldn't let me attach without changing extension)****

Copy the file to /lib/modules/current (as root) on your N900. Also copy to /lib/modules/<name of your kernel> - in my case : /lib/modules/2.6.28.10-power49

NB: I'm not actually sure it needs to go in both but I did just to make sure. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can advise.... ?

Reboot and VOILA: working mmc slot. :smileyvery-happy:

All I did was edit the source of the module to remove the cover checks. I only successfully completed this a few minutes ago but all seems well. I'll come back in a couple of days with an update.

It's a fairly crude hack and I might go back to it to see if it can be improved but I've spent far too much time recently farting around trying to keep this brilliant but seemingly delicate phone working adequately. I also have the communications error - currently fixed with some folded paper between the sim holder and battery. :smileyfrustrated:

Always greatly admired NOKIA stuff... never again!

I don't have time to verify whether forum has mangled encoding of the file.

Thank you howie99! Great job! Your module works for me. I'm using 2.6.28.10-power50 kernel, RX-51.

Re: memory card and n900

If you have a problem with memory card not detecting by your device.

Please follow the same.

Phone n 900 connected to a USB datacable to PC

Select option mass storage mode. - You can see my computer  - drive – showing memory card size

Then open the phone back cover , you can see a black color rectangle on bottom of lens cover, it’s a magnet coating for trigger the camera cover sensor , clean it with cloth..

 ooops carefully ok.

Open file manager – you can see still showing phone memory only.

Open lens cover –

then put the back cover –

close the lens cover – booooooooooooom

(don’t fix phone back cover in close lens cover state)

Suddenly you can see memory card symbol is showing on your

 file manager.

Try this method.

Nothing cost it…….. just try ………………..
