using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

[ Edited ]

i've been playing around with the alias commands and semi got the hang of it so for anyone who wants to have a go, copy and paste this command

echo 'alias r="sudo gainroot"' 'ud="apt-get update"' 'ug="apt-get upgrade"' 'ugy="apt-get upgrade -y"' 'ar="apt-get autoremove"' > /home/user/.profile

i haven't added clean/autoclean so you might want to include them

once added, open up a new terminal and they will work, and if you're not quite getting it. r="sudo gainroot" means you just press r then enter to become root

as you can see they're pretty easy to do, so just edit them to suit yourselves and add anything else you want.

i haven't figured out how to add extra commands to the list so you need to run the command with all the alias every time you want to add a new one

if anyone knows how to add them, feel free to comment

EDIT

the commands aren't working whilst being root, i'll work on and post back

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

after you change the alias, can you still use "sudo gainroot" or are you stuck using "r"

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

i can run all the commands e.g. ud, ugy but i get an error because its not root.
if i press r it runs the sudo gainroot command but once root it can't find any of the aliases
i've considered saving it to root/.profile but i'm worried about overwriting it and causing a problem

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

i've saved it to root/.profile and they all work now, i'm just wondering why reboot no longer works and if it'd even boot anyway :-s
i'll have to test that tomorrow, not in the mood for flashing it now

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

turns out its not the best idea to overwrite root/.profile :-s
anyone know how to restore it

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

cant you just reverse the commands of the alias?

if not, i should have my n900 back today...shipping shows it out for delievery.

i may be able to copy that data for you and have you access it from my server.

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

@ceroberts
i've kinda figued it out for now but i've only added part of the original .profile file. just the PATH part of it

i used vi to edit it and all seems well so far, if you're happy to test it will you edit it as root and add the aliases commands to see if it works

it seems to work for me but i've re written it that many times that i might have just gotten lucky :-)
if it does work, it'll really speed things up for people

[ Edited ]

i JUST got my phone in my hand, literally, 10 minutes ago and tested the usb port and it's good.

so i am restoring.

i think my wife would like me to NOT be fooling around with it for a few days!  lol.

which means, i will not be fooling around with nitroid, ipv6, or aliases, to eliminate and reflashing from failures!  lol.

i think  i went flash overboard and time the last couple weeks.

:smileytongue:

83% of restore right now, then i have to install all the applications, about 165 or so, and then transfer about 20gb of audio, 1.3 gb of mm10, then do all my modest/conversations/OC/fmtxd stuff...proly a good 3 hours at least..on wifi.

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

you may remember a few weeks ago i said i needed my screen fixing, still haven't done it yet

and now you've reminded me what i have to go through when it comes back, i really don't wan't to send it in :-s
thats why i've been playing in the xterm and trying out nitdroid, hoping to break it so i have more incentive to send it away
the worst part is it'll come back with vodafone's watered down os, so it'll need re flashing then everything restoring

anyway, back on to the topic
i'll keep you posted on how it goes with the aliases cos if it works out, all you'll need to do to become root, update and upgrade is.

r
ud
ugy

Re: using 'alias' to speed up Xterm

anyone fancy being a gineau pig on this
i'm 99% sure it won't cause a problem, i'm useing it myself without a problem but i've edited the file in question beyond recognition so i want to see how it works properly.
if anyone wants to try i'll post a stsp by step guide on how to do it, its pretty easy to do but it has to be done as root so there's always a risk

i need a screenshot before i give you the guide tho cos mine looks a lot different so run

root
vi /root/.profile
:q

then take a screenshot Ctrl + Shift + P, if the file is larger than the screen allows, take it of the top of the file
