Gmail support and EAS

I just bought a Windows Phone 8, a Lumia 820. I don't understand about the issue of Google not supporting Microsoft EAS. Will this affect gmail? All I care about is I am able to access my gmail account. Thanks.

You can still setup your Gmail account on the phone but since GMAIL support EAS, you have to disable the syncing of contacts and calendar from GMAIL to avoid conflicts on Live contacts and calendar. Go to Settings > Email+accounts > Tap Gmail > Uncheck Contacts and Calendars.

This applies to new accounts only, afaik existing account will not change.
