Goto Settings>Connection>Destinations>Options>Default connection, set to Always Ask. Also go through the connection settings for individual applications which use the internet and set them accordingly.
For example, for MFE, when in Mesaging, goto Options>Settings>Mail for Exchange>Options>Edit profile>Connection>Sync while roaming, set this to No.
You will find similar settings for Nokia Maps and other applications that require an internet connection.
