The stars start to appear once a user has reached the professor rank (around 300 posts with a good rating).
As you progress through a rank you gain more stars.
A professor has 1-3 bronze stars
A mobile visionary has 1-3 silver stars
A mobile guru has 1-5 gold stars
A mobile sensei has 1-5 ruby stars
A mobile overlord has 5 ruby stars as this is the top rank.

Thanks psychomania, that's exactly how it goes.
The factors that affect your rank include the amount of posts you write and the average rating that your posts get from other members. Also, you need to have been a member here for a certain time before gaining certain ranks.
