Unsolicited phone calls

[ Edited ]

We became aware that some customers in India have received unsolicited telephone calls from somebody claiming to be from Nokia who asked about the type of phones customers were using, and also requested IMEI numbers and personal information.

We have confirmed with Nokia Care in India that Nokia has not been making such calls, so if somebody contacts you unexpectedly and asks for personal information, we urge you to treat this with suspicion.

Generally speaking, you are only likely to receive a call from Nokia under certain circumstances, which might be:

  • If you have contacted Nokia by any means yourself and are expecting to be contacted back.
  • If you have entered any competitions run by Nokia, such as in our Facebook pages or official blogs, you may be contacted if you are lucky enough to win something.
  • If you have recently received service under warranty from one of our Nokia Care points, you may be contacted and asked to participate in a customer satisfaction survey - in such cases, Nokia will not need to request any personal information that it does not already have.

If you should ever be contacted out-of-the-blue by somebody claiming to represent Nokia or any other company, we urge you to use due diligence before giving any personal information. If you ever have reason to suspect that somebody is fraudulently pretending to be Nokia, you can always contact Nokia Care by the number shown on the Nokia web site for your country - for details visit www.nokia.com/support and then follow the Contact link.

Please also be on alert for unsolicited e-mails claiming that you have wone large sums of money, Nokia's comments on those scams can be found here: http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/t5/News-and-Announcements/Nokia-responds-to-hoax-e-mails-and-SMS...

Re: Unsolicited phone calls

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't heard about that happening in the US yet but being aware is a big advantage.

I'm just wondering, what do these people do with the IMEI? Could they be one of the call centers Nokia hired to assist Nokia customers? Some of these call centers resort to fraudulent tactics just to meet the client's (Nokia's) requirements.

Re: Unsolicited phone calls

Well, I did a little research through Google and I read about this violation committed by a big telephone company here in the US. Activation numbers were faked and several unsolicited phone call abuse were reported to consumer complaint sites such as www.callercenter.com. And that telephone company was aware of the fraud.

Re: Unsolicited phone calls

Received call from +912041487400, an automated voice saying 'Thank you and good bye'. Googling  that number I found many have reported they received call from the same number or in that series. Best way is not to attend calls from such numbers.
