I'm on my third Lumia now with exactly the same result - the compass is totally wrong. A friend's Lumia is the same as well, as are several from others in the forum here. The thing we all have in common seems to be that we're in NZ/AUS, so it's probably just stuffed up down here... perhaps the developers think the world is flat.
The ones I've had all point in exactly the same direction, which indicates that they are not individually faulty, and instead that the phone's factory setup is wrong.
I'm going to call Nokia NZ on Monday and get their opinion on the issue as there's no point returning the phones for replacements if in fact none of them work.
Suggest anyone else with the issue get hold of Nokia as well so that there's some movement on the issue.
Rob
p.s. don't suggest calibrating the compass... we're long past that.

The orientation on Nokia Drive on my Lumia 800 in UK with location on is at least 45 degrees out. Compass symbol is red , it is impossible to calibrate it.

Yesterday I saw a post about an app "nokia ciy lens beta". nice app I thought BUT... if you have a bad compass/magnetometer it won't work well. When I point my camera to the south it shows me places/stores/etc that are located to the west.
I think this should be fixable through a software update, you just have to give an offset to the compass or something like that.
please Nokia.. take care of this.

I've found this in some microsoft webpage:
I guess is a common problem, software fixeable.

I'm a new Lumia 800 owner and I've just discovered this bug. The worrying thing is that nobody seems to want to fix it.
It seems the issue is OS-related rather than hardware-related. But now that Nokia and Windows Phone are married, I'd like to think they could push Microsoft on the problem for the good of their own users.
Any app that uses compass features in the southern hemisphere is borked. So all those fancy city lens, map and drive apps Nokia is touting? Completely useless for half the world.
Is it really that hard to find a developer who can program a compass?
