The audio settings is placed a bit funny (inside settings) instead of being accessable through the music player. And Settings submenus can't be "pinned to start" as a tile so I can't place access to it there. 

Did I miss a way to do that? How about an app perhaps like "toggle"? Nokia could make their own "Toggle" for their special features.

Good suggestion, though as there is no equaliser settings due to the platform limitations of Windows Phone 8, you could always leave feedback at their website: http://windowsphone.uservoice.com

Would be good to have shortcuts, so you can always leave feedback with Nokia directly (as this is a user to user forum only), by clickign the Nokia Support link at the bottom of this page.

What do you mean "there are no equaliser settings"?

They are under "Settings-> Audio.

I just cant pin them to the start menu, which ouwld be nice as I suppose its a feature you want to tweak depending on if you use the Purity inear headset or Shure 440 headphones. Maybe also for different genres. Would be nice to even be able to pin certain EQ profiles to the start for quick swap.

Sorry I meant that in stock Windows Phone 8, there is no equaliser settings. Phones like HTC 8X have added their own equaliser in form of beats audio, and Nokia have added their own. Its not built-in to the WP8 platform I meant.

They are all nice suggestions and hey, I and a lot of other users would find that convenient yes, but your suggestions are better suited to either the Microsoft forums or speaking directly with Nokia.

The audio choice has disappeared from my Lumia 822?  Any ideas?

Do you have corded headphones in it, or did you switch to wireless?

Yes, you will need to have headphones / earphones plugged in for the options to present themselves. If the option for Audio in the Settings has disappeared altogether, it may be due to an update gone wrong.
