If you cancel the wizard do you get a popup that your new hardware was not properly installed and might not function correctly ? I get that, but I also get another window popup as "Portable Device" and offering various options to choose, i.e. Open files and browse in Windows Explorer and Sync digital media files using WMP, etc.

That is EXACTLY what I get. It offers me WMP, and a couple of others, or the option of None of the above (type quote).
The first time I used the phone, I wanted to go into WMP and download some music......the phone/computer (whichever), decided that it was going to download EVERYTHING on my computer to the phone....hahaha.....lucky for me, I noticed it within a few songs being synced, and hit cancel/stop.

When it gives you that option again, select the option to "Open device to view files"

cjlim : I've just done the above, and it's taken me to My Computer\Windows Phone
Is this what you were expecting? I'd be honest with you, this is the method I opted for a couple of nights ago when I just wanted to download some stored music and photos (from my PC). It's just that rather than me doing it your 'simple' way, I went in through the back door by selecting 'Start > My Computer' etc.
The thing is, using the above, I've no longer got that horrid symbol in the bottom left of the screen telling me I'm connected in a non-compatible USB mode.
So maybe this is the way?
Thanks for now anyway. ![]()

Yes, this is the way I do it on my xp netbook and it allows me to drag and drop files to and from it. Not the prettiest but does the job.

Get contacts on your new phone, from old phone with the 'Transfer My Data' app. Install it on your new phone and run it twice. It is in the store, Nokia Collection, on your new phone. Run it Twice to get text messages.
Working with Windows - follow thie table from MS. Program links are there, read footnotes.
