Is it possible to just download pictures direct to my computer as with my previous Nokia mobile. I don't want to send them to Skydrive, email them or get involved in Zune, all of which I find much too complicated.

You will be able to transfer media files over bluetooth once you get the WP7.8 update which you should be getting soon if not already.
