Is it necessary to have a charging shell to read NFC tags?

No, the 820 is NFC capable with or without the charging shell which is only required for wireless charging.

I got 10 NTAG203, ndef formatted, which I tried reading. I occasionally got to read one of them, just once.

My Nexus 7 has no problem reading them. Should I return the phone or is there anything else I can do.

I've noticed the Lumia 820 has quite a small NFC reading area. Seems to work better above the camera with the phone at a 45 degree angle to the tag.

My nephew has an 820, but it's not reading the tag I put in his birthday card. Seems his section of settings doesn't have 'Tap & Send nor anything similar to turn on NFC. Any ideas folks?
