I have the Lumia 820 with the Navigon navigation app installed.  I went on a trip this past weekend and noticed a strange battery drain while driving to my destination. The drive was a little over 2 hours and I was charging the phone the whole time. I figured I would test it on the drive home. I charged the phone completely before starting the drive home. I was camping so I had to use the lighter jack in the car which is always on and charged the phone from less then 10% to 100% overnight.  Again the drive was a little over 2 hours, had the Navigon app open and running the whole time and the phone was plugged into the lighter and the charging icon was registering a charge the whole time.  The only other thing running was cellular data. NFC, Bluetooth, Wifi, Nokia Drive, all off. When I arrived home the phone was at 45% and was very hot.

I upgraded from the Samsung Focus and using the Navigon app in the same car never ever had less power when I  I ended a trip to when I started a trip.  I use the Navigon app all time so this is a real issue.  I am also going to post this on the Navigon website.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the output of your car charger? It needs to be at least 1000mA to work correctly with the Lumia 820. Many older chargers are only 500mA so are unable to supply enough power. It could also be the case that the Navigon app isn't properly optimised for WP8 so it could be drawing way too much power.

It should be written on it somewhere. If you've had it more than two years it will probably be an older low output one.

I've used my 920 with a Nokia branded 1000mA charger and faced no such issue with Nokia drive. It charged the phone at a reasonable rate whilst navigating. Not tried it with navigon.

Does the Samsung Focus require 1000mAh?

Pass, ask samsung. Many modern phones need high output chargers when being used for navigation. I first had the issue with google navigation on an HTC android a couple of years ago where the battery was dropping whilst connected to my 500mA charger.

So your issue is either the charger, the navigon app or a combination of both.

The adapter I was using says 5.0 to 700 mA.  I have a new one that says Output:5V/1A.  What is the 1A?

1A is the same as 1000mA. Hopefully that charger will perform better than the 700mA one. If not then it looks like navigon on WP8 is the issue.

As long as its still 5V a 2000mA charger is safe to use.

Is the higher A / mAh number better as long as it is 5v?  Will it charge faster?  Is anything over 1A/1000mAh a waste?

As long as its 5v it is fine. 2000mA chargers do charge faster but not twice as quick as 1000mA.

Just wanted to follow up.  

I drove for about an hour with the Navigon app on and a new lighter adpater that is 1000 mAh.  The phone started out at 100% charged.  The phone kept a full charge for most of the trip till I recieved a few calls on speaker. At the end of the hour the phone was at 96%.  I am happy with that.

I can vouch that a cheap 5V charger will NOT work on these phones.  The stock Nokia charger is rated 1A.  Works fine.  But I have tried a cheap drugstore car charger and it will NOT charge the phone properly.

Hi All,

I also faced battery Problem with Nokia 820 Model.

1. After Go to Settings --> Swipe Right to see Background Tasks --> Block All Background Tasks

2.Go to settings --> battery saver --> switch it on and advanced --> choose Now until next charge.

Then I got 60 hours of battery life with 90 mins of phone usage /day. You can also try this solution.

I didn't have any problem with charging the phone, but I have another problem with the battery, I noticed that sometimes my battery started to drain so fast (I mean from 100 to 10 in less than 2 hrs!!!), even when I'm not using the phone! and when I pick the phone the area on the right hand side of the rear camera (which I believe the CPU located) is warm (it's not hot but warmer than rest of the phone). I managed my background tasks, etc. but didn't work. It seems that there is bug which sometimes the OS won't release (terminate) the processes (even after closing the app). I tried turn the phone on/off but didn't work until uninstalling the last application that just installed or opened. It happened 3-4 times and the last one was today when I opened my Nokia Music. At first I thought may be it's because of the 3G usage, but even after switching to the X-Box music to stream from my Micro-SD card the battery was draining fast.
