@gahbmwm5

Did you replace your phone with another White Lumia 900, or a different device? If another White Lumia 900, all of your problems (including the purple hue)? That seems pretty remarkable.

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

[ Edited ]

I have been using a white Lumia 900 for about 10 days now. In regards to the above issues other are reporting:

  1. Display purple hue when set to low brightness - Yes. Very annoying. I pointed it out to my wife (she's using a blue Lumia 900) a few days before finding it being reported over in forums.wpcentral.com
  2. Screen Response Slowness - Haven't noticed any issues.
  3. Scrolling Slowness - Definitely agree. Too slow. My Droid X2 was way faster scrolling, as well as the Samsung Focus a friend had that got me turned on to Windows phone.
  4. Speaker/Headset volume discrepancy - Not sure I've used either enough to be able to give feedback.
  5. Changing volume while the screen is off - Agreed. It's inconsistent. It usually gets there. But seems like I have to press it a lot more times when the screen is off than when it's on.
  6. Vibrate rattling - No problems. I keep my phone on vibrate most of the time & think I would have noticed this by now. I haven't.
  7. Camera - Haven't used it enough to be able to give feedback.
  8. Occasional freezing - Yes it stutters sometimes. Seems to be more so in the Marketplace. Although it hasn't been severe enough to be disruptive, etc. I will say I was a bit surprised to see this, as it was my impression that this was a high-end Windows Phone, and that in general the OS design of Windows Phone, etc. is such that it is far less likely for the multi-tasking, etc. to cause stuttering in the active app.
  9. Capacitive buttons sticking - My phone does not have this problem.
  10. Camera focus on "Macro" objects - Haven't tested. I can't give feedback here.
  11. Camera not always launching via the physical camera button - Yes it sometimes doesn't work the screen is off. Additionally, Saturday this was working on my wife's blue Lumia 900. But not on my wite Lumia 900. But I had battery saver enabled. I didn't know whether this feature possibly doesn't work with battery saver....
  12. Battery/heat issues - Yes. Big time. I will post more details below, as there are a lot of them (details), and I don't want to make this list too long.
  13. Unclear/blurry photos - No problems with this so far. I don't think my phone has this problem.
  14. Back button not going back & instead going to fast switch mode - My phone does not have this problem.
  15. Phone audio issues - Freaky echos, freaky feedback, sometimes people say I'm too quiet.
  16. Charger status notification delay - Probably 1-2 seconds. No biggie for me.
  17. Dropping calls - Strong signal, but dropping about 2 per day. I've been with Verizon for over 6 years, and on average have dropped 3-6 calls per month with Verizon. So I'm dropping probably about 60 calls monthly now. That is 50 times what I've traditionally dropped with Verizon.

As with others, I am generally disappointed with my initial experiences with this phone. There was a lot of media hype about it, as well as a general consensus that Nokia is awesome at building phones & would be bringing that to the Windows Phone platform to create some kind of "super phone". Additionally the fact that Microsoft made just a major investment in Nokia lends to the idea that Nokia would do a great job AND that this would be a flagship device.

Although I just switched from an Android on Verizon. I feel like I was hoping to get the Samsung Galaxy Nexus of the Windows Phone world, and instead I feel like I just got myself into a 2-year contract with AT&T for a phone that is about the equivelant of the somewhat buggy, but ultimately still good Droid X2 I just had.

So obviously I'm a bit sad/disappointed over the issue.

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

[ Edited ]

So generally speaking to me the main problems are:

  1. Battery life & phone heating up. - I had a weekend in Albuquerque (but live in Farmington), and battery life was atrocious (more details below). Presently I am trying to avoid using my phone except where possible. I really hate the feeling of being afraid to use my phone because I don't want to burn up the battery. I should not be afraid to use my phone, and feel like I have to avoid using it so that its battery will still have juice in case I really need it. I WANT TO USE MY PHONE. So this is problem numero uno.
  2. Phone audio issues - I'm a bit surprised that no one else has had the audio issues in calls. I am probably having a least twice daily that people have to hang up & call me back because the echo on the call or feedback, etc. is so bad. But I think I probably have at least a couple more daily where the quality is overall poor, but we choose to endure it anyway.
  3. Dropping calls - Ugh. I feel like I've gone back 10 years in my cell phone use. I used to drop calls like this. Back in 2002. Although a part of me thinks this is something I'll have to get used to by switching to AT&T, I am hopeful that it's the phone.

Those are the major ones. The rest I can put up with.

I definitely don't like the purple hue on the screen. Beyond that the other issues are more of just the phone not being as cool as it could/should be.

Regarding the battery life issues. For the first week of using the phone, I thought (although I may have been wrong) that the battery life was quite good (at least better than my Droid X2). But Friday morning I called AT&T customer service & upgraded to the 5GB data plan that includes tethering. Then on the drive to Albq (in the passenger seat  :-) I was using my laptop online. Long story short, the battery was drained within a couple of hours, even though I had the phone plugged in charging the whole time. So great news. When wireless tethering, the phone burns through the battery faster than it can be charged. Neat! :-(

From there, for the rest of my trip (Friday afternoon-Sunday afternoon), it seemed that I literally couldn't get the battery to last longer than a couple of hours. Then I started playing "Battery Saver", and turning the phone off when I don't need it, can't take pictures of my kids at the Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, or Zoo. Great. Thanks Nokia (sorry for the sarcasm. But obviously frustrating & disappointing).

Back to Farmington & I don't think my battery is really lasting much longer. A part of me felt like there was the possibility that I was just using my phone a lot more heavily than normal. Or even more likely that it was the first time that I've really used the data connection very much on my phone. During the first week, I pretty much only used WiFi when I was downloading apps, surfing the internet, etc.

But as I discussed the situation with a sales guy in our AT&T mall kiosk (who also has a black or blue Lumia 900) yesterday, he said this sounded wrong & that I should probably consider having the phone replaced.

And the fact that most others here aren't reporting the battery issues, makes me think that I may have got a lemon.

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

So I thought responding here to your problems would be better than elsewhere. Also thought I would comment on my experiences with the same points you have. I have some time during lunch so I will try and explain. I have the Black Nokia Lumia 900, since the Friday before Launch:

  1. Purple Hue - I have seen the posts on the issue, but it seems to only affect some of the white ones. I would try replacing it with a similar unit if you want, and test it in store before leaving to see if the Low leads to the purple "Hue." I am guessing your wife's does not have this issue
  2. I haven't noticed any response issues myself, or on the two other peoples Lumias that I have helped with.
  3. Scrolling issues - This is one I have heard others talk about online, but myself I have not seen. Is it that ti stutters while scrolling or does it feel like a speed govenor slowing the scrolling? Also does this seem to be related to a particular area or app?
  4. Speaker/Headset Discrepency - I haven't noticed a difference. I actually love the level it reaches and the richness of the speaker versus my two previous phones(LG Quantum & Alltel Desire(android).
  5. Volume while screen is off - I have a bluetooth headset with volume controls. When I use it the volume buttons on the phone do seem to be disabled. When using a plugin pair of headphones then the buttons seem to be enabled and can turn it up and down. I tend to just hold them till they reach the level needed, this might be why I have never seen this issue. I don't adjust the volume that much just occasionally in my pocket.
  6. Vibration Rattle - Mine does occasionally but not enough to bug me at all.
  7. Camera - I have liked it as long as I don't forget to turn the flash back on when it is in a darker room.
  8. Freezing - Haven't seen this issue, except once in my 3-4 weeks of usage. I tried doing about three things at once and was using the ESPN app and it just hung for a second than unfroze.
  9. Capacative Button Freezing - Not seen this
  10. Camera focus on Macro - Haven't had any focusing issues
  11. Camera not always launching - I have seen this occasionally, then I just click the power button and it works from there. I am guessing a software fix, which I hope they kick out
  12. Batttery Heat - I haven't seen anything here except once when I was letting my wife play a rather visual game for a long time. But even then it wasn't very hot compared to my previous phones. Battery has been great for my normal usuage. I usally do good through a whole day and deep into the night. I have 3 email accounts, a basic level of browsing certain tech sites for articles. I also tend to listen to music and podcasts(non-streaming) and still do ok.
  13. Blurry pics - Only when I move so I tend to use the tap focus
  14. Back button issue - not seen
  15. Phone Audio - I really haven't had any issues except for when my bluetooth is dieing(it doesn't give me a tone sadly) but swapping to the phone I never have an issue
  16. Charger status delay - I have seen this but doesn't but me
  17. Dropping Calls - I have only had this happen in the places where I had with other phones such as going over the hill in one spot. Otherwise I have had awesome signal around here. Not sure if you are referencing your Abluquerque trips, since going down to there does result in multipel drops. This is an ATT issue, and bad. I do have some top network guys issue if you are having such issues elsewhere.

Battery Life and phone heating up - I really don't have the heatup/battery life issue, although I believe Albuquerque is LTE right? Has it been bad while you are in farmington too? If so I would swap it out. You mentioned your dtrip to Ablq and teathering during this. ATT's weak spot is in between farmington and ablbuqerque. I have had meetings with other officials and they are hoping in the next year for this to improve.

With this phone I use the Wi-fi much more even though as a Gov entity we are unlimited, and the battery life has been great but so has been the 3G.

I really lean to you getting a lemon, definitly since you don't seem to mention the same issues all occuring on your wifes and your issues seem to vary greatly from mine. I would swap it and test the hue issue before leaving the store. If you have any problems with this let me know, I have some names of some people to push things with.

Phone audio issues - I haven't had audio issues. I do live outside the normal places you live so it might be an ATT issue, but with all the pother problems you are having I lean to the phone

Dropping Calls - This one I haven't had na issue really with either, but

It saddens me you are having these issues since I said it was a good phone.

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

Here are my issues on my 3rd Lumia 900. Yes, you read right, THIRD.

Slight Vibration issue. Has a nasty rattle to it every so often, Better than the last device, but still present nonetheless.

Camera Button works when it wants to. I've seen people say the same thing. It's pretty much a **bleep** shoot if the phone is in sleep mode.

The dreaded purple tint screen issue. Had to set the phone to Medium brightness. If Automatic lighting is on, the purple is all over the place.

In-Line Microphone Headset. I'm using the headset that was packaged in my original Samsung Focus. Again, works when it wants to. Occasionally, if I wake the phone from sleep, use for a second or so, then lock it again, the in line microphone button will work. And that is only for pause/play, answer/hang up, or press+hold for voice commands. Very sporadic.

Here's hoping for a super update to address some of the issues! My local AT&T store is getting tired of seeing me, and frankly, I'm getting tired of seeing them.

Sorry I did not reply back sooner on this @ImpalaDoug:

Been having a challenge trying to 'Log-In'...to both Nokia-Discussion-US Forums & Nokia-Discussion-Europe Forums...

I should have been more clear, as with my 2nd White Lumia, there is clearly no purplish hue on Low Brightness setting...I was checking this out with a Regional AT&T Manager, who had a Cyan model...His also did not display the purplish hue on Low Brightness... (This was the first time that he had seen this...) So he went into the back and brought out 2 more White Models, 1 Cyan and 1 Black..All 4 of these devices had the purplish hue...He made notes...

My Battery life is good and have had no heating, or discharging issues, however he had seen a couple other units that had the same issues as you describe.

Have not fooled around much with the camera to make a compartive analysis..

Call quality has been quite good as I travel alot throughout the US and abroad...

The slow scrolling and erratic capacity buttons I do have...and hopefully this will be rectified in the near future by a Nokia firmware update..

He even called a Nokia Rep, when I was in the store to report our testing findings....He apologized for the issues however I pointed out that his collegues (other Regional Managers) should also utilize the Nokia Discussion Forums for good, accurate resources and issues...Unfortunately, the AT&T Sales Staff do not go-beyond-the-normal......to get updated on their 'flagship device'...Again he made note here too...

Vibration Rattle: Yes....just like in the Ytube video...2nd white device is a little better here, but it is still present..

The video demonstration between the L800 vs L900 Vibra feature is good.....and mine sounds like the L900 demonstrated....high pitch...however the rattle occurs (at times) like when a text message or email comes in...

Even pressing the Main Windows (Flag) capacity button will produce this slight rattle in a quiet environment...

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

Once again apologies for the double post as I'm posting this from my L900...for more testing purposes...
Relating to the tinny rattle...go to Settings---->Ringtone-sounds---->turn off vibrate
Reboot device.. Now (obviously) I do not get the vibrate sound on any text messages or incoming calls...However when I power off the device again.....this tinny rattle sounds.. Lol
Can any of our collective membership also verify this?
This is with the latest firmware update and a hard reset. .
Thanks

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

I live in the UK, I'm on the Vodafone network and have been using my white Lumia 900 for a week now. I thought I would share my user experience and mention the issues I've noticed affecting my handset.

Display:

The purple hue on my display is only noticeable on the screen moments before it automatically goes to sleep, where the brightness is low. This brightness is lower than the lowest manual setting, so I rarely see it but it is still annoying because when it does happen it is very obvious.

At normal brightness, the keyboard does not look an even shade of grey, the left hand side is slightly more purple than the right.

Scroll lag:

This effect is initally noticeable on the home screen. I can begin scrolling with my finger at the corner of 4 adjacent tiles and it clearly doesn't keep up with my finger, even at low scroll speed. It is most noticeable in the game "Wordament" when fast multi directional scrolling is required to complete words. Many times, letters will be missed out as the digitizer doesn't keep up with my fingertip.

Sound:

I have noticed a discrepancy in the external speaker volume and the volume at which the voice command assistant speaks. Even though the ringtone may be prefetcly audible, the sound from the voice control assistant is very low. This is the only real discrepancy I have noticed.

Camera:

Probably the most noticeable problem with my handset is the quality of the camera and the dreaded purple hue apparent in the centre of low/flourescent light environments. Pictures rarely focus properly. Only photos in very well lit conditions with distant focus, such as that of a landscape turn out acceptably. It seems as though the auto focus returns the affirmative "dink" sound even when the camera has been unable to focus the image.

Charge/Zune Delay:

Finally, I sometimes have a relatively long delay between plugging in my phone to the wall outlet or the USB on my computer before the phone acknowledges this action. Irritating as my Omnia 7 used to recognise immediately.

I'm sure many of these are software related and they can be rectified by Nokia. I'm hoping they make a big effore to solve these problems because the handset is stunning and very fast at loading apps and websites. Plus, it's very important that for the Lumia series, Nokia's big push with Windows Phone to make sure their customers are hapy.

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

Wanted to share my recent victory solving a few annoying problems on a new Nokia Lumia 900.  I was experiencing the 'random reboot' and 'tiles/apps not opening completely when selected' problems discussed in several posts on this thread.  I did a factory reset, and made sure I had the latest SW update, but still had the issues.  Went to online chat with my provider (AT&T), they discovered that my phone "was not properly associated to their tower" (whatever that means). Apparently my previous phone was still the registered phone to the line subscription. After about 2 minutes and a SIM extraction, reboot sequence, all my problems disappeared!  Well, except for the mediocre camera ha.

For those experiencing some of these issues, might be worth a quick online tech support chat with your provider to ensure the new phone is properly registered to your service subscription.

good luck.  Its a beautiful phone!!!!!

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

I wanted to add another issue to the list that I've experienced on 3 Lumia 900s.  When in my car, I have the phone mounted upright (portrait) - that is, I'm not holding the phone in my hand.  Randomly, the screen quickly switches to landscape mode and then back again.  I’m not moving the phone when this happens and it doesn't seem to be related to the car turning or bumps in the road.  I've experienced this with 3 units (the other two were returned for other problems - this screen issue, the slow responsiveness and the volume problems are the only remaining issues).  I don't know whether the orientation sensor/accelerometer is too sensitive in this device but I do know that this didn't happen on my Samsung Focus.  Given that I've seen this behavior on 3 devices, I don't think it is limited to my current device.

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

I too have experienced the problem of the delay with the buttons. I have also experienced the long press button issue when I only tapped them, thus bringing up the task switcher and the voice command. The keys don't behave as they should. I have already exchanged my phone once on the 30th day. The new phone appeared to be OK but then the problem occurred again. I did a search online and eventually was led to this forum where I discovered that it was when playing audio through the speakers that the problem would pop up. I can make it happen while playing a game with audio, watching a movie on Netflix or listening to music through the Zune music player. When listening to audio through wired headphones or via Bluetooth, the problem doesn't exist. Can anyone else confirm this issue?

I have the problem on my new replacement while music is playing through the speakers. I will try creating a silent audio file and try playing it through the speakers to see if the problem still occurs to determine if it has something to do with the fact that the usage of the speaker by itself is the problem or if it's because of possible speaker vibration interfering with the buttons nearby. I know that when the speakers are turned all the way down to 0/30 while playing music through the Zune music player, the buttons will work as intended on the first try but any subsequent attempt to use the buttons to go back seems to either initially not respond and when it does respond, it brings up the task switcher. I have a similar no response/voice command issue when pressing the Windows button. I have done this with music and a video clip shot on the phone. Mind you, this is with the speakers even at 0/30. Once I plug in headphones, the problem ceases at any volume setting.

I have also experienced the heat issue and accompanying battery drainage issue as well but I can't pinpoint the cause of that. Generally it happens when I've been in a GPS enabled app and press the power button to put the phone to sleep. Maybe the GPS is still active with the phone in a sleep state and this is normal. It sure does heat up my pockets though.

Did you know there is a "Macro" setting under "Focus Mode" in the "Photo Camera Settings" that allows you to focus on objects up close?

I am having similar problems...I can't text, play games, watch videos, etc without my phone acting up! Every time I try to do any of these things, my phone will either go to task switcher or do the voice command thing. Then there are the times that it just freezes up and won't do anything at all...I really love this phone but these issues are about to drove me CRAZY!! Btw, this is my second Lumia 900..

Re: Lumia 900 Various Issues

Hi, I chose to replace my N97 mini with a new 900 just before the release of the 920 and all I can say is that at I am delighted with the improvement. So that's December 2012 in Australia. I have had none of the problems mentioned above until recently. One episode of battery heating while charging which I fixed by standing the phone on its side. The other is more serious but really only a nuisance. The phone goes through a short unexpected reset at random moments. Why can this be? Zune is a pain of course. :-) Ta.

You may also try to update the software. Updating the software will improve the performance of the phone.

For the step-by-step procedure on how to update the software, please check this link: http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/lumia-software-update/

Hope this helps. :smileyhappy:

Lumia 900 doesnt have this option to play an audiobook which you can pause anytime. Ipod has this as a function without having to install a 3rd party apps. Can you do something like that in the updates?
