Hello
I'm very very very happy with my 920. I bought it the first day I could (1st November, in France) and being an early WindowsPhone adopter, I can say without doubt that this phone is the best phone I had in a long time.
Of course, I'm not posting here just to say everything is okey (for i've done it times and times again on my social network already), but because I face a small problem, and can't find a solution...
Every time I receive a phone call, I just answer directly, and put the phone to my ear. So far, so good.
At the end of the call, I put away the phone, so I can click the "End call" button, but the screen stays dark.
I was just thinking the proximity sensor was doing its job a bit too eagerly, but I've tested something this afternoon :
I put my phone on the table, face up, pureview facing the table, and I phoned myself with another line.
When the phone rang, I pushed the "answer" button, without taking the phone.
And the screen turned black.
And as long as the call is happening, I can't turn the screen on.
It's really a pb for I can't choose to go on speaker, or modify the volume, or use Keyboard on Vocal Services, or even to terminate the call : I have to wait the call ends on the other side.
I've tried every single button on the phone, but no one seems to do the trick : the screen stays off until the call is finished
I don't think the proximity sensor is completly off, because outside a call, I have no other problem, and it seems like a software pb, but how can I be sure, and what can I do ?

Other people on this forum have reported the same issue but someone noticed dust near to the proximity sensor. They advised to blow hard on the affected area and it seems to have solved the problem for them.

Yep, I had this exact problem. Blowing the dust out of the earpiece seems to have made it go away. Alas, a bunch of dust is accumulating under the front-facing camera as well. Seems that the glass may not be seated properly, leading to dust accumulating near the proximity sensor and camera. I'm not really excited about returning the phone, for fear of encountering one of the other oft-reported issues...

I've tried that, and it doesnt work.
And no, I have nothing on the screen, no protection at all.
I'm not really sure where is the proximity sensor, or if it's it that deals with the auto-contrat.
My autocontrast works just fine, so i'm not sure if it is the same thing.
Do you know how I can test the proximity sensor ? Is there an app for that ? I've search a bit, but I couldn't find anything suitable.

There is no "diagnostic function" within Windows Phone 8 as there was in Windows Phone 7.5 unfortunately.

Blowing the dust helped... but I shouldn’t have to do this on a brand new phone nor any aged phone for that matter. I’ve never had this problem with any other phone before. It looks like they have a bad design on this one, what a shame.

Hi,
as i wrote in an other thread here the prox- sensor seemd to be calibrated every time you restart your lumia.
The result of that is:
1. restart in bright environment -> sonsor detection is lower. It should help if yor screen stays dark on calls
2. restart in dark environment -> sensor detection is higher. It should help if your screen stays active on calls
Means that you have direkt influence on sensor behaviour depending on your restart environment.
This helped me on 2 lumias, and seemed to help others too.
Solutions with blowing dust etc. is only temporary, cause you cannot stop the dust entry.

thx for the tip.
I took back my Lumia to the shop, for maintenance (as it is free and all)
Note that I thought : maybe it is a software problem, I should try to Hard Reset before taking it back to the store... just in case.... and it bricked the phone.
it's another known problem, from what i've read elsewhere, but it sure helped me to bring back the phone.
For those looking for the same problem : i contacted Nokia support directly with the chat, and they orientated me to the store so I have it repaired, because I cannot remember it working correctly.
(and i'm using my wife old iPhone 3GS meanwhile... and it's a pain when you had a 920 to go back to any other phone T_T )
