Hi,
My Lumia 920 doesn't notify me of incoming text messages (no sound, no vibration). The live tile doesn't show a number either. However, I have the message in my inbox and it is displayed as an unread message.
Usually, when I restart the phone, this problem goes away, but after a while (one day later) it stops again. Is there any other way to fix this, except to constantly restart?

@NorbsLumia
Have you checked in Settings > ringtones+sounds that for "New text or IM" one is asigned where it is "Nokia message" by default?

I realized that my problem has noting to do with my alert tones, but with the fact that my Lumia 920 has difficulties to sync with my accounts (Microsoft, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google). It shows that it is syncing with them, but never finishes the task. Therefore, I cannot send messages (neither text messages), I am not notified of incoming new ones, I cannot write mails, etc. Restarting the phone doesn't help. While this problem appeared four days ago, it is not permanent. For example yesterday my syncing worked perfectly, however, today it won't do it again. Any suggestions what I should try?

You were right. It was due to my carrier. However, I believe it is not because of the network reception, but because I have no data plan (restricted data access). Is there a way to set a priority for syncing, i.e. when I have no more MB avaiable from my provider, the phone should use WiFi instead (and generally use WiFi when avaiable as the main source)?

It is very frustrating. If I run out of megabytes (in my monthly package), my phone stops synchronising with my accounts, even though I am connected to a WiFi network. If I put it on flight mode and restart the phone, then It suddenly realizes that it has WiFi and syncs all my accounts. However, when I turn back the network connection, it stops syncing again. The worst part of this is, that I cannot send messages (SMS) while it is trying to sync.
I tried to turn off tha data connection under the mobile network option but that didn't help either.
Do you think there is an official way to complain. I mean not being able to send text messages is a crucial problem for me.

Yes. That was what I tried (turning off data connection under network mobile /cellular). I restarted the phone afterwards, but it didn't help. If I wait for a long time, my phone will eventually stop syncing and will display that the accounts are not up to date. If that happens, I can again send messages and I am notified of new messages. However, once I go into mails, or want to see what's up with people, it starts syncing again and I am back to my old problem.

By default Windows Phone will connect to and use a known secure Wi-Fi network. Open networks will only be connected to manually. Once available a Wi-Fi connection always takes priority over a mobile network connection.
If the phone goes to lockscreen and is not connected to a charger it will revert to mobile data and disconnect from the available Wi-Fi.
This has however no relevance to or impact on SMS notifications or reception as these use the cellular (voice) connection and not any data connection.

I get what you are saying, and in theory it sounds nice, but it does not solve my problem.
Here are my settings.
Mobile network: Data connection set on OFF, Roaming set on OFF, Highest connection set on 3G, Network selection set on automatic.
I have a prepaid card with credit on it to be used for calling and SMS, but I run out of MB.
WiFi is turned on. It is my private home connection (password protected) which I also use for writing this reply. The Proxy is turned OFF.
Bluetooth, flightmode are turned OFF.
I also connected my phone via cable to my laptop, so that the WiFi connection doesn't stop.
So when I go now to email+accounts it still cannot sync. I attached a few screenshots so that you get an idea.

And while it is trying to sync, it doesn't notify me of incoming new messages, and doesn't allow me to send new messages. It sounds unbelievable but thats how it is. When my accounts shows "Not up to date", then my messaging starts to work again.
PS. Some more screenshots.

I have the same problem as you described.
How can we fix that?

I'm beginning to think this is an issue with just how MS has the OS set up to handle wifi connections. For some reason they allow the wifi to turn off instead of keeping it on. (As others have explained.)
I wonder if you try one of these apps if it will make a difference.

The first time I hear about these apps it was called "Keep Alive", but I think it is no more or transformed into the one posted above.

My WiFi is always turned OFF, I don't believe that it has something to do with this issue

Syncing on my added accounts never ends on all accounts when Data connection is ON. Meanwhile I cannot get any notification about SMS, emails, notifications from other apps.

I tried the app you suggested (Active WiFi) and it didn't help. I will buy some MB today to check whether my accounts sync more smoothly when I have a data plan with my carrier.

brankovlai - Do you have a data plan? Who is your carrier?
NorbsLumia - Did you restart your phone after installing the app? Like you have in the before except make sure you have Wifi Alive enabled before turning airplane mode off.

I put the phone on Flight mode and restarted the phone (after installing Active WiFi as you said).
When it turns on, I start to get message notifications from Outlook (which are generally the mails from gmail). So I go to see the emails+accounts setting, and it shows that currently all my accounts are being syncronized. So I wait (Active WiFi is on). In the mean time I go to see who is online from my friends. It lists them out. Great I think. I flip it to my threads, and back to see my online friends, and now all the contacts disappeared. It says it is connecting, but after four minutes it does not connect, instead it recommends me to set up a Microsoft account. I also go and try to send a mail to myself, but I get the message "We're sorry, but the message failed...". So in the first minute, it seems it is working and suddenly it goes crazy (and this is all in flight mode while I am connected to a secure WiFi connection). And actually it never shows under emails+accounts that my account are synced. It is either syncronizing or shows that they "Need attention" or "Not up to date". I made several screenshots which I will post later to verify my story.
