Hi all,

So what is it? What can it be used for? As a user in London.

Wasn't even aware of this until I upgraded to the Lumia 920.

I'm curious as to how it can benefit me...

NFC is short for Near Field Communication. It allows devices with NFC to establish communication by just touching them together. Examples of use are as follows.

Pairing devices by just touching. You can already buy NFC speakers which will pair with your phone by just touching. Soon, you should be able to pay for your purchases by touching a transponder pad with your NFC electronic wallet. You can transfer information between devices by touching. Devices can read data by special NFC tags by just touching.

When are they planning to make it possible to pay for things? That would be impressive!

You can find out a lot of information about NFC via a quick google search. As for when you'll be able to pay for things that's down to things like card providers and network providers.

Orange support it but only seems to be a limited set of phones at the moment.

Having a 920 with an NFC chip and Wallet is the basic requirement. You may still need a different SIM card from your network provider and/or specific apps to make these sort of transactions work.

It's early days. But I'm hopeful!

NFC has a lot of future potential. You can even buy cheap tags and create your own NFC tags, and use apps such as the one mentioned here: http://www.wpcentral.com/nfc-interactor-windows-phone-8-gets-update to creat your own tags.

Ok, So I have read everything I found so far in reference to nfc based payments using Microsoft wallet and the lumia 920. It appears for wallet to fully work you need a secure sim from your carrier and a phone that is capable of the nfc payments.

So if I have a secure sim in my lumia 920 and a valid credit card listed in my Microsoft wallet, can I make NFC payments or not ?. everything I have read seem to jump around this.

You need to confirm that your network operates a payment system and the vendor accepts nfc transactions.
