I thought the forum might be interested in this experience with a Nokia 920 (Australian - Telstra network) connection to a VW RNS510 system.

When the phone first arrived, I tried pairing it to the car. Pairing worked a breeze, except that it only connected for music, no phone functions whatsoever. I tried all the on/off cycling of the devices and bluetooth many times. To fill in the wait until a software fix is released, I bought a bluetooth headset (Sprout SBTE-10, whatever that is). What happened next defies belief.

I paired the headset to the phone and it appears to work fine. Initially when in the vehicle the bluetooth settings screen shows the headset connected for voice, and the car connected for music. However shortly afterwards the voice functions switch over to the car, the phone works as it should including steering wheel controls etc, and the headset says 'not connected'. If I remove the headset from the vehicle and restart the bluetooth, the phone reverts to a music only connection with the vehicle and no phone functions.

So to have a functional bluetooth connection between the 920 and the car I need to have a headset in the vehicle and turned on, even though it will show up on the phone as 'not connected'. This is repeatable - time will tell if it is reliable. I'll leave it to those that know a lot more about bluetooth than I do to try and explain it.

I have the Red AT&T 920 and have been having similar problems with my 2012 Ford SYNC system in my new F150.  When ever I ask the system to connect the phone will lock up and not respond but still play what ever was last played until I hard reset it. 

I have noticed however that if I start the music app BEFORE I connect it to the car it works just fine.  It plays and responds normally just like my Lumia 900 did.  Don't know if this helps but there is definately an issue.

Bluetooth is unuseable. This makes the phone unuseable in my Province as handsfree is mandatory. 920 will not even see my Jawbone, so cannot use that. In truck I can pair with my Pioneer Avic Z1 navigation. It worked fine for about 2 calls. Then I started claling or getting calls where I could not hear anyone even though I could see on the nav screen that call was in progress (as well as the phone screen). People could hear me though clearly. Most other times the other persons voice is robotic distortion so bad I cannot tell a single word. When this happens they say my voice has some distortion, but they can still tell what I am saying. I've fought with a few things on this phone, but this is a dealbreaker as I don't want a massive fine when I am caught talking on the phone in vehicle which is necessary for me. Taking unit back today but thought I would post what mine did, and with what. The fact that Nokia support told a user in another thread here experiencing battery issues to run his phone in airplane mode doesn't bode well for a solution anytime soon. I also had a thread of mine pulled off here and part of the form reply blamed a lot on Microsoft. Whether that is true or not is irrelevant and I'm not gonna sit through months of finger pointing. Seems more and more basica functionality of email, or heck a phonecall take second seat to facebook and other useless apps.

I have a 2008 Dodge Charger and my Bluetooth connects for standard functions without a problem. Unfortunately, I can't stream music on my head unit. I use the auxiliary connector but, there is a problem with both the Bluetooth and auxiliary working together on this device. When a call comes in the music fades, my ringtone plays, the caller’s name is announced, I press the answer button and I can’t hear anyone. This wasn’t an issue with my hTC HD7.  And is rather disturbing to see the problems stated in the forum about the phone we want to love.

Nokia Lumia 920 pairs successfully via Voice and Music to bluetooth headset (Bose Bluetooth headset).

Music and video works for hours of listening (A2DP profile).

Voice stops sending audio to the headset while on call after a few minutes of speaking on the phone. I can switch to speaker and hear the other party, switch back to bluetooth- and silence. I have tried shutting off bluetooth, and turning back on, re-pairing, but nothing short of turning the phone off and on brings the voice profile back to life.

There is also some loud static while dialing (pressing of numbers, on the inital start of the key tone).

The same headset has no issues on the Lumia 900.

My guess is a bluetooth voice stack issue.

Why is there no official comment on bluetooth incompatibility or/and issues...  (Finland 920 to BMW 2011 5 seiries).... once paired, works. But when returning to car after shutting down, you got to do the process all over again. There are times, sometimes it autoconnects... but thats rare......  WHen do we get that solved?

There is no statement because Nokia claims this board is for users helping users and does not provide support here.. like users of a month-old phone are going to have much advice for typical problems let alone obviously hardware or software issues.

I returned my phone, new phone I swear has 2 different icons in the app list that the other didn't have and numerous problems I had with the handset were solved, although it still has the yahoo mail issue. I am not sure then if there were updates applied in the factory that have not been released publicly, or applied by the carrier overlay. Bluetooth I got to pair with the Jawbone finally. Bluetooth in my truck however does the same thing.. first call worked fine, then I had a text come in and the text-to-voice was completely garbled. I guess it's an issue with all handsets. I will wait the 2 weeks best buy gives for returns, and if no update to fix that, have to return this phone and go to a DNA.

My original post has been deleted by NOKIA, because I did not close it with a question, well then, here again, closing with a question:

For more than 10years I was using NOKIA-phones, after the disaster with the last Symbian models and the nonexistence of support, I switched to iPhone and this was no problem to connect with any vehicle we do have in the company, VW Tuareg 2, Landcruiser 100, Landcruiser 200, Chrysler, Jeep, etc.

After two years trouble free operation of my iPhone, I decided to give NOKIA another chance and bought the 920. A great phone, but again, it fails with it´s connectivity to the Tuareg 2.

The very first connection failed after 30sec, from that moment on, the entire inbuilt phone system of the Tuareg 2 is defective now, cannot even be rebooted and even the inbuilt car phone system with it´s own SIM does no longer work, have to see the mechanic to get a complete software installation.

After researching the problem more detailed (I am an engineer and other than Nokia believes, I know, what I do..), the 920 is trying to implement a script via Bluetooth and this causes to total failure. Again, Nokia presents a phone, which has not been tested on German Cars and most likely also with other brands.

so, WARNING: DO NOT TRY TO CONNECT 920 via BLUETOOTH to Tuareg 2, you will need to see your mechanic.

Now the question to NOKIA: Why does NOKIA not simply use a standard Bluetooth protocol to make this generally good phone working with standard devices ????????????

Looking forward to get again a nice e-mail from NOKIA, hopefully not with the information, that my post has been removed because of violating forum rules.

Good question, but directed to the wrong company. Your question would be better directed to Microsoft who are responsible for the software side of things. Nokia are only responsible for the hardware and a few of the Nokia apps. 

Just so you know, I have succesfully paired my Lumia to 4 German cars. Basically, I have succesfully paired it with every thing I have paired it with. Certain variants of the Lumia 920 seems to having more bluetooth problems.

To my mind the most important facet of your situation is

the apparently wrecked host telephone system in your car.

For the attempt to pair to result in a dead automotive

communications system seems ...almost unbelievable.

Yes, Nokia should fix their stuff, agreed. However you

should flag this with VW because VW should *NOT*

allow a slave to kill the host, if you get my drift. Notifying

VW should get you manufacturer-to-manufacturer direct

attention even if none such ever gets published. To help

others on this forum, without the dead hands of the

delete buttons, you should specify some important

facts that may be important:

1) which network/country?

2) transferred phonebook 'on phone' or 'on SIM'?

3) pairing confirmed THEN fail or not even confirmed?

Well gentlemen (and ladies maybe), there is absolutely no reason for any of you to hold your breath.

Since the understanding is that this forum is only user to user, and no interaction with Nokia, i filed an official support request on my bluetooth challenges.

I have a BMW 650 and I have had the following phones before the 920, which all worked one 100% with phone book, voice interaction, buttons, etc.

iPhone 1, 2, 3 and 4

HTC HD7 S

Lumia 800

Lumia 900

The very precise reply I received is attached below.

So with that state of mind by a phone manufacturer in 2012, I would sell my stock in Nokia and think long and hard over why Steve Ballmer used a HTC Windows Phone 8 at the launch.

With Nokia... you should've filed this with Microsoft as

it is they who must fix all of this with a firmware patch.

I accept your working history as documented but not your

stock market advice, its reasoning or its position.

You already noticed the preciseness of the Nokia message.

They are treading a fine path between naturally irate users

like us and a powerful upstream supplier... Yet your invective

says otherwise. Consider the following after cooling down:

* they AGREE with you... you've a connectivity problem

* they AGREE with you... it's incompatible with your car!

* they don't support 3rd party stuff (as a rule does anyone?)

So take their 'survey' and use it to point out Nokia's current

market vulnerability as a direct result of Microsoft's seeming

inability to resolve this Bluetooth issue.

Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!, I was checking for updates periodically, and I just tried (12/19/2012 3PM CST ) and GUESS WHAT it searched for couple of minutes and  downloading updates.. GO AHEAD adn UPDATE your 920..........................

I second that -- I updated my US AT&T 920, and forgot about it. On the way home, I got a call and it immediately rang using the car's bluetooth system and it was amazing again.

BMW E90 as reference. 

It might just have been an issue with the Bluetooth stack used by the Windows Phone team. Kudos for them for releasing this update so fast.

I just installed the OTA Updates on my AT&T Lumia 920......didn't fix anything.
2010 Lincoln w/SYNC...
1. Phone pairs OK. Bluetooth on phone shows SYNC "connected....voice, music".
2. Can accept incoming calls via SYNC.
3. Cannot make calls via SYNC - connects to the phone, shows  "dialing" on dash and phone, then goes to "In Privacy"
   when call is answered...if I turn bluetooth off on the phone call screen then turn it back on
   I can hear and speak over SYNC.
4. If I dial from the phone call goes over SYNC OK.
5. Nokia Drive + Beta - works fine when in "Bluetooth Audio" only setting in SYNC.
6.  Going to SYNC phone status shows I'm connected to AT&T, signal strength, battery level, etc.
7.  Paired a Plantronics PRO earpiece...works flawlessly. Voice dial out, take incoming calls.

I did a Factory Reset and Reset to Defaults on SYNC system and removed the SYNC connection on phone
after updates and repaired phone.

My Samsung Focus Win 7.5 worked flawlessly.

The 1st Lumia 920 had the same problem.

AT&T acknowledged this is a problem. Waiting on Nokia Level 2 Support to call me.
 In my opinion (I was in the tech business) it is a bluetooth problem. Appears

that when SYNC is communicating to phone audio, not control,  is a problem, but when phone

communicates with SYNC all is OK.
 Even though the Lumia is bluetooth 3.0 it should be backward compatibile with

Lincoln (Ford) SYNC Bluetooth 2.1 EDR
 Love the phone and hoping this gets fixed.

Unfortunately, I'm still having the same problem with Bluetooth after the update as I was before..  I press the call button on my ear piece, say, "Call <person X>"  I hear the speaker say, "Calling <person X>" and then I don't hear anything.  No ringing, nothing.  After a couple of seconds, It will tell me the headset is disconnected.  In the mean time, the call has gone through, the person I'm calling has answered, said "hello.  Hello?" and hung up before I get the head set reconnected and dial again, manually.
