Lumia 920 registers phantom touches.

My new Lumia 920 is registering touches when nothing is touching the screen. I've reset the phone and turned down the touch screen sensitivity.

So what happens is I'll be on the home screen and it'll start auto-tapping a tile, usually about a quarter of the way down from the top of the screen. It then becomes unresponsive to touch. Sometimes before this happens, scrolling through the UI will be jittery, like it's lagging or processing huge amounts of background data. I've also turned off most apps in background. I am running Facebook app and Weather channel app. I'm really at a loss here and hope someone can help.

Thanks

Re: Lumia 920 registers phantom touches.

Try reseting your phone from about option of settings menu
If your phone behaves same after reset then your phone could be a defective unit.

Hi Ninjalceberg,

If you are still having problems after the reset, remember to backup all important content on your phone onto your PC, and try performing a hard reset, and see if that works. If you are still having issues, then it may be a hardware fault, and you will need to return your phone to your point of purchase or visit your local Nokia Care point for them to inspect.

I tried a hard reset and it still occurs. I guess I'll have to take it in. Thanks for the replies.

Re: Lumia 920 registers phantom touches.

My third 920 came on Monday. I was very sceptical of using it and made sure it didn't have any of the problems i had previously.

Vibrate rattle: check

Light leak: fail

battery: check

However, I noticed while setting up the new phone, it suddenly exited out of whatever I was doing, bring up multi-tasking screen and then stayed there. It happened thrice before I realized that the back button was registering phantom touches/presses.

Did a soft reset but no luck so far. I am totally bummed.

Re: Lumia 920 registers phantom touches.

I actually noticed this myself also i believe it has something to do with the heat/moisture your hands give off when they are close to the screen or a button. For instance if i have my left hand holding the phone the bottom of my hand of my left thumb though not touching the screen is about 1/4 inch away from the back button yet the phone registers that it was touched. Heck alot of this message was typed by not even touching the screen It seems to be worse if you turn the sensitivity off. I actually have all the problems you have OP. Soft reset and hard resets don't seem to help. Defective unit? Possible but I think the root of the problem has to do with the driver controlling the sensitivity. If the phone is registering multiple clicks of a back button while trying to execute a back command that may be CPU or memory intensive its going to create these types of problems. Again this is me theorizing..from what I ask seeing with my 920.

Re: Lumia 920 registers phantom touches.

My "phantom touches" come with no fingers or objects anywhere close to the back button. It is annoying when I am typing something and suddenly the app exits and the multitask screen opens up. I can actually hear the tactile feedback-ish sound when this occurs. Problem is, it's not reproduceable continuously which means that any attempts to return would be happily turned down. :smileysad:

Re: Lumia 920 registers phantom touches.

Sounds familiar, got mine back from repairs after 920 became a brick. Started going from screen to screen all by itself sitting on the table, no hands near it at all. Top of the phone became quite hot. Did a soft reset, problem remained, did a hard rest problem remained, hard reset again...hung on the welcome back screen. Gave up and sent it back to the store, has to go back to the repairer twice before they will really do anything....
