Ok so I dunno whether vodafone or nokia is more to blame here :
So I wanted a Lumia 800 last year and I was told I couldn't upgrade until easter this year. Come upgrade time the Lumia 900 was coming out so I opted to go for that one. I was told Vodafone wouldn't give me one (wait ... you won't sell me a phone I want? at all??!) so I'd have to buy it myself or get it through a 3rd party. I tried Phones4u but they wouldn't deal with me because I was a vodafone business customer not personal customer.
Thus began my nightmare month of trying to convert from business to personal just to get a phone through a 3rd party because vodafone wouldn't just sell me one (in contrast to a friend who wanted an iphone on o2 who didn't support iphones but gave him one anyway rather than ahve him leave them - novel idea). Misinformation, forms filled in unecessarily, having to pretend an image file was scanned for them to accept it, hours spent on the phone - many of them on hold listening to 2 tunes over an over, often ending with a disconnection - teams bouncing me back n forwards and passing the buck ... it was terrible and I got pretty depressed about the whole thing as my number was being held hostage. I was tired of teams in India and elsewhere passing me about and telling me conflicting things and I'd wasted a month of my life getting ever miserable about just wanting ot join the modern internet phone age after years of my trusty N95 8G waiting patiently.
Eventually I got moved and p4u instantly sold me the handset with a new vodafone tariff and I was away. Except I wasn't - because the internet didn't seem to work on my phone. I looked around online and eventually found if I went to settings->mobile network I could press add APN and put in address "internet" and name/pw as "web" and then tada I now had working internet. However I then found a couple weeks later I couldn't receive MMS. I couldn't send MMS either. Thus began my internet search where I found all sorts of threads giving settinsg like wap.vodafone.co.uk and the IP address for the proxy and the port - and even the MMSCA address thing. But I tried combinations of all of that in both the "mobile network" APN place and also using "network setup" app from nokia. I also tried selecting the wrong network then back to vodafone uk prepaid and turning the phone off and all sorts. I had many phonecalls to vodafone and even visited a shop a couple of times. While there he tested my SIM worked in his phone for MMS so it's not that. He did say though that my account didn't have an "expiry date" for the MMS setting and that in his experience not having an expiry date means it's not on so he added that - still no help. What's worse was that not only did someone on the phone support reset my vodafone.co.uk account at 1 point to try and fix it, another person on a different call deleted the whole damn thing and I've had to reregister it all over again -_-
So yeah - I've been round the houses and infact round the internet - and all I'm seeing is people upset with this issue which seems to occur on many lumia's whereby MMS doesn't work. Strangely my sisters UK vodafone lumia 800 MMS'd fine with my SIM in and hers didn't even have customer APN settings or anything. Go figure.
Eitherway the best thing anyone has said I can do (thanks for leaving me high and dry vodafone) is to "try resetting your phone". But resetting my phone will lose me all my SMS messages and such as far as I'm aware and all my apps and their saved data (can laways reinstall the app itself). I've spent many years using nokia pc suite to have complete control over individual/total backup of SMS messages, contacts, photos/videos etc along with full phone backups - I used to do all that every month. Now all I can do is sync to Zune on my PC to get the photos/videos off but I appear to ahve no access to the contacts/SMS messages and no way to backup the handset (unless you count using a homebrew "fake upgrade" method via Zune).
PS for the record I've already trawled pages like these even today :
Solved! Go to Solution.
I have the exact same issue with Virgin Mobile, they simply do not support Windows Phone, my solution was to change my number to O2 which works fine, as do orange and Tmob, which is surprising as Virgin piggy back off them ? Very annoying but virgin help line offered no other solution !
If I have helped at all, a click on the White Star is always appreciated :

You are a hero... I did exactly what you wrote, (ish), and it worked for me too. What a palava. It beggers belief that we have to do these things in this day and age.
