Lumia maps - again

I have two phones, an iPhone and a Nokia phone. The iPhone is user fríendly and the Nokia phone provides maps. I have just exchanged my old Nokia with a Lumia 800 and am ending in frustration ready to throw the Lumia out of the window. My earlier Nokia had maps downloaded from Africa, Asia and Europe. I could find locations without going on the Internet, as roaming is expensive. Now, it appears to me that I cannot download such maps. Well, I downloaded a map for Germany and UAE for the Nokia Drive function. But then, when I remove the sim card and have no Wifi and open Nokia Drive, it tells me that I can only use Nokia Drive in online mode. But this is not what I want, which is why I downloaded the maps. Also, if I open Nokia drive in Dubai, for example, and I want to find a location in Germany, it turns the map upside down. Is there any solution, or should I throw it out of the window and stick to my old Nokia with the proper maps? I have had the Lumia for a week now and cannot at all share any positive experience yet with it - but would really like to.

Nokia Lumia 800 is not a successor to older Nokia phones. So the fact that your old legacy Nokia phone had certain features is irrelavant. There are 3rd party apps on the marketplace that allow you to download offline maps.

Out of interest I tried taking out my sim card to see what happens with Nokia Drive and (to my surprise) it loaded the map and could find my location fine athougth I can't set a destination, the maps work though. Did you really try this or are just making stuff up and ranting for no reason?

I have no idea what you are talking about that it turns the map upside down.

Offline Nokia Drive is coming soon

If this isn't a phone you like then you may aswell through it out of the window but I would recommend taking it back first and see if you can get your money back, most carriers give you a 1 month cancellation period.

Re: Lumia maps - again

It's true. Lumia refused to run Nokia Drive without Sim card installed. Nokia Map has no offline map. Shouldn't have sold off my Symbian Nokia phone. This is their main selling point. Disappointed.

Re: Lumia maps - again

I have tried it without a sim card in and it works fine.

There is an update happening this week that allows offline mode.

What is your Nokia Drive Version? There is no update in my location. I know that version 2 has offline support. Has it been released yet?

Re: Lumia maps - again

I would take anything Nokia says with a pinch of salt.

Drive on Marketplace says ver 1.5, reinstalled and its ver 1.1

Re: Lumia maps - again

Nokia arent the only ones that do that.
Mango is 7.5 but the current OS is 7.1
Its just to do with software revision standards

Re: Lumia maps - again

From speaking to a Nokia software developer on "Conversations"; Nokia Drive for WP was absolutely rushed in order to get it ready for the Lumia launch. Priority was to get the software launched, with bare essential features whilst making sure the app was stable - this Nokia acheived. It was always Nokia's intention to upgrade Drive in line with previous versions on Symbian. This week, Drive 2.0 is set to go to market. Offline mode is there. They are already working on Drive 3.0 which will include many features that are still missing. Today, Nokia have released firmware updates for many markets - so they are improving what I already regard as a good device.

Re: Lumia maps - again

Hi all,

Nokia Drive v2.0 was released to Marketplace yesterday. Normal propagation of updates will mean it should become available in 2-3 days.

Main enhancements of Nokia Drive v2.0 are:

  • full offline support
  • China support
  • set destination from recent
  • NAC (Analytics) opt out
  • Speed limit warner

Re: Lumia maps - again

That's great! Hopefully it doesn't need any roaming data just to navigate. Heard Assisted GPS need telcom data to function?

btw, please don't wipe off all our maps with every update and force us to download these huge maps again.

Re: Lumia maps - again

hi bhwong1,

A-GPS always requires an active dataconnection. When working offline any additional functionality gained by using A-GPS would not be available.

Re: Lumia maps - again

Hi aadicoool,

As there is no (good) map coverage at this time Nokia Drive 2.0 is not available for Israel.
