Hi, 

So let me break this down easily so everyone can understand, and help me purchase this device. 

• I'm from Australia, but in India for a few months. I left before the 920 was released in Australia, and had no idea when the 920 was coming out in India. 
• 3/4 days ago I was in Hong Kong, so I bought a unlocked and unbranded Lumia 920 locally from Broadway (a local store). 
• I saw no problems, so I was back in India the same day I bough the phone. 
• Upon returning to India, I put a local Indian 'Airtel Sim Card' in my 920. (Bear with me, here's where it get's annoying). 
• What I noticed was two things:
• Upon putting in my Sim Card, no signal was detected. The actual Sim Card was detected and Airtel Sim Applications (located in the Cellular/Mobile section) are detected. 
• Otherwise, 1 bar of signal is detected when I change the 'Highest Connection Speed' to 4G or 3G (2G seems to have nothing). 
• Now, when this 1 bar is detected, calling works though data isn't working (not sure if the access point needs to be changed, but none will work if the signal doesn't stop dropping off). SMS's don't seem to work either... but oddly calls do. 
• Now to put this into perspective, the same sim card in a Lumia 900 or iPhone 4S has full signal. 

Can anyone help? And if I need to replace it, I'm screwed aren't I by buying a phone in another country? SOme urgent help would be fantastic!

EDIT 1: SMS's work if the signal is at 1 bar. Data is still out.

Sounds like you may have purchased a defective phone from Hong Kong. Warranty will not be valid in India, only in country of purchase. You can try your luck at your local Nokia Care point in India: http://nokia.com/support to see if they will still be able to assist you.

That's very dissapointing. Now I'm basically left in the dark and with a useless phone. 

EDIT: Is it possible that I have a locked phone rather than a bugged phone?

The 920 hasn't even been released in India, so as Jimmy has said, you can sell it and someone will snap it up in a jiffy.

Hi! Did you try contacting airtel in this regard? Had initial problems with data on Airtel on my Lumia 920 too. You will need to go to their main office as the customer support executive on the phone will not help you a lot. Also go to the link below & download updates for apps & see if it makes a difference.

Hopefully the Lumia 920 will be released soon in India so you can get it checked then.

Well, I've tried with 2 airtel simcards and even a docomo sim card in Nokia Care itself. They want to ship it to Delhi to fix, I don't want that as an option yet. 

I may well have to find a airtel center to check

Did you check the link which I provided? It has QR codes that you can scan & update your device. Also as the device is yet to be launched in India it may take upto a month before they can fix it.

Have you tried to manually search for a 2G network and selecting it?

In that case, contacting airtel is worth a shot. But if they are not able to resolve it then Nokia Care Centre is the only resort.

Weirdly, selecting 3G or 4G (even though 4G is essentially 3G in India now) connects with 1 bar at times (though it's mostly without any network). Switching to 2G doesn't help at all, rather it goes to 'no network status' on 2G right away. 

Nokia Care said they'll ship it up to Delhi, but I doubt it would help when they don't know how to fix it yet, with the phone not out till next week.

so am i , im having exactly the same problem. sent to Nokia Care for warranty and they update the firmware but doesn't seem to fix the problem!! its the hardware problem!!

NO  !! your phone is good the problem is with the Aircel sim card thats a piece of **bleep** i used to use that sim card and never ever gave me proper network its the worse sim card in india

Hi,

I am using the lumia 920 in india, Using an airtel sim. I am facing the same problem. It mostly gives one bar of network or no network at all. I have tried resetting the phone and switching sims. All the sims work perfectly fine on other phone.

Did any of you find a solution to it.

I am having similar issue with my lumia 920.

-Purchased in US through AT&T

-Moved to India recently.

-Got it unlocked through AT&T on May 9th

-Put in a new airtel sim

Everything seems to be working except SMS's

please let me know if you have figured out a solution.
