What is really funny about that article (and several others on the topic) is that the person reviewing doesn't even seem to notice how little detail the 920 captures. That particular article is a little apples vs oranges considering the camera HW in the N8 but that doesn't change the fact that all the people captured by the 920 look like wax statues.

I'm the first to say 100% crops from any camera phone shouldn't be expected to look good. If they did we'd have no need to SLR cameras.
However, he was a bit more forgiving to the 920's shots than I would have been. The lack of actual detail (probably from noise reduction) combined with the heavily articated edge enhancments really are wrecking the final photos.
I've purposfully overexposed and softned (just a little since I hate over softned portraits) when shooting poitraits on an SLR but it just looks weird the way the 920 post processes.

One certainly shouldn't expect SLR performance from a smartphone (LOL!) but one should expect to get comparable performance to other high end smartphones. I would think that counts doubly for smartphones that advertise their cameras as a key feature (as the 920 does).
Its particularly frustrating because they have done something pretty unique with their implementation of OIS and the lower shutter speeds yet they fumbled on the relatively simple task of implementing decent image compression / filtering (considering they should be old-hats by now on that front).
Bah!

Well , i disagree with your comment totally.
I got my Nokia Lumia 920 1 month ago and since that time i'm trying to do ALL the settings, and adjustments possible and is ...useless.
One of my work colleague bought as well a Nokia 920 from another country and we compared the pictures ...TOTAL failure.
I have at home an "old" HTC Desire Z, a Sony Xperia S and Lumia 920.
I can say that the "old" HTC with his camera is doing better on sharpness than Lumia !!!
I can prove you by pictures !
If i compare with Sony , than Nokia is a total failure !
Is so unfocused and you can't understand the details.
I'm EXTREMLY disappointed, i already recommend to all my friends to be aware about this problem with Lumia 920.
Especially i bought this model for the camera !
I was totally disappointed !!!!
Now you may say :
"You can't compare with Xperia S because this has a 12 Mpx camera and Lumia has 8.7 Mpx ..." SO WHAT ?
We speak about focus and sharpness !!!
And for all of you to know, i set up Xperia to "low resolution" which is almost as Lumia, and ....TOTAL failure.
Others (like many comments here) would say : "wait for Nokia updats on camera !
"
But then the question appears : "WHY i bought a "flagship" of Nokia technology , and i paid A LOT of money on it, to ......WAIT because it has a **bleep** image quality " ?
This is absurd !
I pay huge amount of money to have a GOOD quality product for the first time, NOT to wait ....1 month, 1 year.
And i remember about the scandal made public before Lumia was initially launched , about Nokia faking pictures ...there were taken with a professional DSLR ...so ..
And for those which are saying that maybe i didn't do the right settings, i would also mention that i'm professional photographer and i have a DSLR camera ...

Well, the pictures are way too soft.
I compare to my iPhone 4 and to my wife's iPhone 5 - I end up so disapointed we don't ever use my phone to take pictures we always use the iPhones.
Video - rules. low light photoes - rules.
I bought this phone thinking i will be the camera guy in the family, but we are so deeply disapointed with any photo this phone takes I just don't want to even try anymore.
Thing is, this is clearly a software issue. Since vidoes look sharp and great, and also you can clearly see the sharp image for a second before image processing kicks in to "enhance" the photo. colors are better after that but this step clearly is responsible for making the photo way too soft and seems unfocused.
I am deeply disapointed and hoping for a software update soon. unfortunately yesterday's phone update did not improve this part.
I just wish for Nokia to publicly recognize this issue and promise a fix. in a month, in 3 months, in 6 months - i can wait, i don't care, i just want to know Nokia gives this priority.

Hi Can you all help me? I dont know if my phone is faulty or seting are wrong. I can not take a single photo when there are lights in the back ground at night. there is always a strong diagonal lense flare. it's the same with vidow or even when i just hold the camera when it's on to take a photo, i can see the line fron the light accross. even this chistmas taking photos nxt to the chistmas tree lights means no one's face can be seen as the lense flare was cutting through. do u guys have a same problem? or is my phone faulty? very disspointed in the phone as u cant take any pictures except for the morning.

I dont know why post processing cant be an option.
My preference is a raw image. then to edit it if it needs it. not taken and edited in one go.
