Started to watch a pay per view movie, shut down the phone by sliding down on the screen, laid it down and forgot about it until the end of the movie. Nearly 2 hrs later the "goodbye" screen was still lit and the phone was warm. As soon as I tried to shut it down it froze.
Thanks to several on this thread I was able to unfreeze it by holding both the volume down (lower of the two volume buttons) and the power button.........I didn't time it but the phone vibrated in about 15 seconds, I let it alone and let it do its restart and that worked.
Being able to restart a frozen phone is OK.....but there is a definite bug that Nokia and/or Microsoft need to fix ASAP. Are we going to be talking about the black screen of death instead of the blue one???? C'mon, I love the phone, but something dumb like this needs to be remedied...........I'm underwater with a large stock and options position with Nokia........I thought their new Windows phone(s) would be their salvation. I hope I wasn't wrong.
I think this phone could be a strong competitor against the Iphone.......my wife has a 4s and I like the 920 much better............so I hope the bug is fixed. Other than that it's a great phone.

Thanks for your tip. My 920 just did the same thing. I held down the volume down and power button. It vibrated after 15 secs and came on!
Like you I really love the phone and hope a fix will be forthcoming soon. Nokia please help!

I bought my Nokia 920 at the Microsoft store here in Seattle last weekend. Love the phone. But this afternoon - the screen was frozen black. It would vibrate if I touched the photo button. And, I heard a text come in.
I was able to resolve doing the hard reboot holding down all 4 buttons. Thank you! I am hoping this doesn't happen again.

Well... my fiance's one had a similari problem early in the morning. After texting me her lumia 920, bought here in Rome, would not react. The screen turned black and a white nokia write appeared. In the end she had to perform the " 2 buttons" soft reset to solve the problem. Now seems ok... Somneone says it could be the nokia drive "beta" that causes some trouble.....

Thanks Yuzby... it is helpful to know Nokia is working on this. How did you find that out? I was about to post the question: since so many of us experience this problem, how we can we get Nokia's attention or comment on this issue. It would be nice to hear from them.
ATT was going to send me a refurb replacement but I cancelled that order (since they have no cyan refurbs anywhere and wouldn't send me a new one) -- it seems like it is just as likely to have the problem unless/until a hardware/firmware/software upgrade happens

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? It started for me a few days ago, after about 4 weeks, and happened intermittently, but it has now got worse and happens after every call. I have done the blowing into the speaker/earpiece, and cleaning the sensor and shining the bright light. All have limited effect but the problem is getting worse. Is the only solution to return for a replacement? If so this will be a major Setback to Nokia, just when it seems to be recovering. Other than this it is a great phone, but it is ridiculous to have a phone that cannot hang up, and would suggest that this is a serious design fault that Nokia should fix very quickly or their recovery will be over and they will go down the hole.
So any other ideas gratefully received - as well as some action from Nokia!

Same problem on my Nokia 920. Got short-time fix with the blowing, but now it seems to be permanent. I have sent a support request to Nokia Support, and got the response that they knew about the problem, and that they were working on it. This is now about 2,5 weeks ago. No solution in sight. I keep wondering about this and can`t understand that they are not able to solve this sooner. So many people talking about this, and having the same problems ("all over the web"). Suggest that you all send a support request to show them. Since it doesn`t seems like they are following their own communities..... ![]()

Restarted the phone by holding both the volume buttons + power button + camera button at the same time for about 15 seconds.
It worked for me.

It hasn't happened a lot for me. It also appears to be decreasing in frequency. When I first got the phone it definitely was happening a few times per week., in the last month it has happened about twice. I have yet to figure out what might trigger it -- applications, etc.,
I tried to get a replacement. I wanted Cyan and ATT had none until last week. They were refusing to give me a new one. They called last week and told me they had a refurb. I said no because it was likely a turn in from someone else having the same problem and there is no evidence to suggest later manufacturing dates had any changes.
Calling Nokia customer support is a waste of time. They deny the existance of a problem. This problem and the other black screen problem when you answer a call are truly annoying and there is enough buzz on the internet to confirm it is in fact a problem. I wish I knew how to access the right folks at Nokia to inquire about fixes being planned. You would think/hope Nokia would be looking at these posts and have the courage to at least say - we are looking into it. But no, just silence. Very frustrating. Great OS, potentially great phone -- but HORRIBLE customer support

just do a soft boot by holding down the volume button plus the on button for ten seconds till you hear it vibrate that should help.

Soft reset works, however it doesn't help if this kind of freezing happens regularly and causes you to miss appointments because the alarm doesn't work.
A top of the line phone should not have this issue. Period.
I am getting a replacement phone, and hope that it's from a batch that doesn't have this issue.

I did the same at first (remove SIM) but found that the hard reset by holding the buttons does work but it can be an abnormally long time -- up to 30 seconds. Strange but true.
