I have a strange issue on a new Nokia Lumia 822 on the Verizon network. What is happening is that any text message the 822 sends out to any basic phone results in garbled text and special characters displayed. However, if the basic phone sends a text to the 822, the text is readable. You can see what I am talking about in the attached picture. This does not happen if a text is sent to any type of smartphone...in this case the text is received and readable as expected. Also, if I send a mms that includes a picture with text to these same basic phones, the text can be read just fine. I was on the phone with Verizon tech support for 2 hours and we were not able to fix it. The finally told me to go get the phone replaced. After getting a new 822 and sim card, the same problem is happening. Not quite sure what to do about this and/or if this is just a Verizon issue.

We are having the same issue. Blackberry Bold 9650 and Samsung Brightside are both receiving garbled texts from my wife's new Nokia 822. Come on Nokia get this fixed! Don't make me return this for another brand, we like the phone.

No luck for me either. There is no network+ on the Verizon version off the 822

Yeah, same here. On the Lumia 822 there is no Call & SMS or Network+ setting. I checked for any updates that may install this setting but there were none. I did check the Lumia 920 and it does have the Call and SMS setting that can change the Character Set option.

Well - the issue with my Blackberry has been resolved. I am not sure if it was something Verizon/Nokia fixed or if the Blackberry update I did yesterday fixed it. waiting for my daughter to wake up so we can see if she can read the texts on her Brightside.

This topic name is misleading. Based on reading the posts, the problem isn't just limited to "all basic phones".
I have the same problem with my Verizon Lumia 822 when I send texts to a HTC TouchPro2 smart phone using Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. The texts that are sent from the TouchPro2 (using the worlds best mobile slider/tilt keyboard, which I miss.) are correct and display as they should.
I read somewhere that we should use another text messaging software until this problem is resolved. Does anyone have a recommendation for an "app" and know if it is as simple as installing the "app"?
The only setting I could find on the phone were:
SETTINGS > Cellular > "Add mms apn"
All the blanks were empty. Does anyone know about this? Would this lead to a solution?
Do we know if Nokia is working on a solution?

This should be fixed now. I just tested it and no longer have the problem.
Looks like VZW changed something on their end.
