Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

I've had my 920 for 2 weeks now and can't fault it - Brilliant phone complimented by a nice up and coming operating system.

Today, I took my phone out of my pocket to discover 3 small scratches on the screen. They are suit trousers so I can guarantee that there's nothing 'sharp' like what you'd see with jean rivets or whatever they're called so I'm baffled as to how this has happened.

I know that this 'Gorilla Glass' isn't going to be 100% safe from scratches but I would have assumed that just having it in a pocket wouldn't result in this. I make a point not to keep anything else in the same pocket as my phone and I've only brought the phone to be when I'm working and I use my iPhone for going about because I don't care whether that gets damaged to be honest.

The most obvious scratch is in the middle of the screen and it's really quite frustrating. I've not yet bought a protector for it yet as they've yet to be released in stores :smileysad:

Needless to say, I'm pretty unhappy right now - Even my iPhone 4 lasted 6 months (and that included me dropping it numerous times) before it received it's first screen on the glass.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

The glass has anti smudge and anti glare coatings on it. I the past, I've found that it is the coatings that scratch instead of the glass itself. One thing about the curved glass is if you put the phone face down, it is the display that is the most prominent bit. I've found quite a few screen protectors for mine. Testing a few at the moment. There is also a company that sells a liquid coating, a bit like car wax.

First one I got was **bleep** and started peeling after 2 days. The one I have on now is great. 2 weeks on and not a loss on it. Not only is the material of good quality and easy to install, it was perfectly cut for a perfect fit.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

My 920 did the same thing.  I have very fine scratches across the bottom of the screen.  It's frustrating because I take very good care of my phones and never experienced this with another phone before.  I wish they found some issue and replaced scratched ones.

I understand that taking care of a phone is the user's responsibility.  I just believe that this one is much more susceptible than others.  More so than is reasonable.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

Ha, got the same experience on my N9 at the past and it was terrible.
So, as I hope that the same problem won't happen on my Lumia 710, I bought a hard case that helps protect the phone and its screen.

Using the screen protector does not seem to be a good option. Especially for me, who has greasy and sweaty hands, when I realised the screen protector actually makes the screen look smudged.
I don't get even get a scratch on my Lumia 710 though.

Same here, started scratching after 3 weeks. Real shame since my HTC hd7 lasted a good year before it's first scratch.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

After an hour of returning with my new lumia form the EE store in Belfast I have noticed multiple scratches in the glass. The phone was not dropped or misused in anyway. This is not acceptable, further more the shop would not exchange the phone. Very good  Phone but let down by poor service providers and suspect defective gorilla glass.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

Yeah - unfortunately I have found the same, used my phone for less than a week and in the same way as my three year old HTC HD2 and the front is more scratched than my old phone which I never used a screen protector on :-(

. . .damn screen protectors delayed in post and won't arrive 'til next week . . . just too late.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

I've only had this phone for less than 2 weeks, and I already have so many scratches on the phone. Unbelievable. This is the main reason why I chose Nokia because of the manufacture claim that this screen is scratch proof. I'm disapointed.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

I've had a slow accumulation of scratches for three weeks since buying my 920. I blamed myself to start with, but today I took my phone out of my pocket and the screen is covered in long scratches. There was nothing else in the pocket. No money, grit, other objects, just soft pockets.

This is so frustrating as I take good care of my phones. My HTC Desire lasted 3 years without a scratch. I have treated this 920 extra carefully, as anyone would a brand new expensive phone, so to have a wrecked screen after only 3 weeks ofcareful use is apalling. Nokia claim to have better durability and build quality, but this isn't my experience. The 920 is delicate and needs to be handled with extra care compared to its competitors and older phones.

I'll be pestering Nokia and my network for a free repair until someone listens and I'll stop recommending Nokia to people looking for a windows phone.

Had mine for one week. Same deal , waiting for screen protectors. Noticed a scratch this morning and it is a nasty little sucker. Have been being as careful as I can.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 - Not so scratch resistant?

Just wanted to add that the plastic body of my phone has absolutely no scratches on at all. Neither does the camera lens or metal surround on the back.

Surely the polycarbonate body can't be more scratch resistant than the glass of the screen, and surely I can't be so unlucky that, by chance, whatever has caused these scratches over multiple weeks just happens to have only occured on the screen?

If others who have been affected by these scratches also have none elsewhere on the phone, doesn't that suggest that there is a problem with the glass?
