Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

I have a red Lumia 920. I got the phone shipped to me from ATT (I live in the United States). The phone is updated the latest version according to the check for updates feature. My phone almost always freezes (90% of time) overnight when I charge the phone via usb. In the morning the phone will be frozen forcing me to soft reset with vol down and power buttons. My battery is full but you can see the possible problems this can cause. I'm going to be graduating and working in healthcare soon so I absolutely need a functioning phone, especially when I'll be on call in an emergency. The phone will always (100% of the time) be frozen in the morning when charged through nokia's wireless charger. Sometimes I will have sporadic freezes needing a soft reset during the day. Turning off bluetooth seems to have helped these "day" freezes. I always turn off bluetooth and close all apps by backing out untill there is only the home screen before charging while I go to bed. The first time I tried this the next morning the pone was ok but ever since then I have woken up and it's frozen. I've never had the phone freeze and give me a black screen while I'm using the phone, only when it is inactive (charging or asleep). My apps outside of those that come with ATT (which I've never used) and Nokia(Cinemagraph, Creative Studio etc) are:

App Highlight

Battery Level

Bloomberg

Connectivity Shortcuts (so I can shutoff bluetooth quicker)

Dictionary.com

eBay

ESPN

Facebook

Fandango

Flashlight-X

IMDb

Kill My Music

Level

Lost Phone Screen

Microsoft Store

Music Wallpaper

Netflix

PDF Reader

SkyDrive

Skype(which I recently used with video chat)

SMS:// Share (Needed to install to share a URL through messaging I think or something like that)

USA Today(never used)

Vimeo(never used)

Wallet(never used)

Weather Chanel(live tile)

Windows Phone Insider

YouSendIt(never used)

Youtube

YPmobile (never used)

I've only installed a few games

I have a Microsoft account, Nokia account, Facebook account, Google mail account, and Yahoo mail account setup under (email+accounts). I have a custom ringtone, Internet sharing is turned off, lockscreen turned off after 1 minute with Facebook, messaging(also set for detailed), battery level, google mail, and phone chosen to show quick status No password. Always connected to WIFI in my house/familiar wifi connections but I have it set to turn Wi-Fi off when screen times out because I thought it might help with freezing. Bluetooth only on when paired with my Creative speakers haven't paired with car or computer yet, tap=send off but I used it initilally with the NFC card that came with the phone, cellular (att data connection on don't roam), location turned on, battery saver on, phone storage both set to store to phone(music+videos and pictures), backup set to backup app list+settings and text messages but not photos, date and time set automatically no 24hr clock, brightness automatic which seems to fluctuate a lot and sometimes gets extremely bright for a second usually following soft reset( happens less after update), Find my Phone set to save location periodically but not to send apps to my phone with push notifications, phone update set to tell when updates are available and to auto download if settings allow, no company account, phone up to date OS version 8.0.10211.204 Firmware: 1232.5951.1249.001, etc not sure if I should share more of those numbers, feedback enabled, Nokia account on, Network+ set to call waiting on and full SMS character set, everything on in display=touch, never gave feedback to Nokia yet, under extras+info Nokia enhancements version 1.6.1.62 and other numbers im not sure if I should share.

Background tasks allowed are Battery Level, Bloomberg, IMDb, Weather Channel, and the blocked ones are Facebook and Nokia Drive+beta because I heard that it can cause the freezing issue. Don't know how to reallow these by the way even when the allow when app is open box is checked.

So yeah I  have some music on there and tried to allow info or get the Buzz tab or whatever and now the buzz tab is just gone, and can only get it back if I turn off "get notifications" or something, I have some contacts, Weather Channel, facebook, me, and battery level pinned among the other things but those seem to be the ones that might use the internet or phone in live tile function. My background photo right now is muic albums from the music wallpaper app. I might try to swith it to a live updating background like the bloomberg background along with the other things (bluetooth etc) turned off to see if that might help the freezing (maybe stop inactivity while I'm asleep and its charging and lock screen is down?) I don't know it's completely conjecture at this point from someone who doesn't know much about computers or smartphones, just using them haha. Also, everytime I unlock the phone from the lock screen, the location notification is in the status bar at te top (circle with dot in the middle). I assume this is for the weather channel and other apps that might use my location so I figured that might be important. It goes away after a half minute of use.

Anyway, I know this is a lot of info and some of it might be useless but if this is indeed an app related issue I think this is the kind of stuff we need to share. Nokia might already get this info from our phones but I was just putting it out there in case others have similar setups/experience. Really hope this gets fixed soon as I love WP8 but simply cannot have this and will temporarily go back to my WP& HTC TITAN if need be.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

I have the same problem

I bought my Lumia 920 20 days ago. But after a few days of buy it, my phone crashes during the night (every day). At the next morning I need to do a Soft-Reset to be able to use it again an set the date and hour again (after the Soft Reset, the date is 01/09/2012 - 06:47). I thought it was due to WP8 error that would be solved with the next update, but I'm sick of this.

What's should I do? Wait for the February's update or send it to a Nokia Care point?

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

I too have the same problem with Lumia 920. For me, its the airplane mode that causing the issue. I turned on airplane mode and after few hours when I turned off, immediately it froze. It happened to me twice in three days.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

I've never had to reset the date and time but it seems many people have had to. Maybe mine is wrong but by the time I look at it it has updated? I live chatted with a Nokia support member. He basically said he was sorry about the issue and I could send it in to get it repaired. I told him many people seem to have gotten brand new phones because of this issue and in a matter of time begin to see the same issues so I wasn't confident about sending it in until they've narrowed it down. Might just need a patch or something. It's very annoying, possibly dangerous, and I really hope it gets fixed with an update.

The update won´t help. I´m using a Lumia 920 with portico firmware installed and still have the same issues.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

Mine doesn't freeze completely. Under use, but not heavy use, especially if the graphics is working hard, it stops/freezes, but it recovers in a couple seconds. What's weirder is that if I keep doing stuff to it when it comes back the stuff is done. I think the actions are queued. For example, I was typing, and it froze. I tapped the screen a few times, no response, then waited and when I came back there were a few spaces added to my text. The most susceptible periods is 2D stuff. Popping the keyboard (2), playing Drag Race (4), playing HD video from the disk (8) and from Youtube (1). Never had to reboot it, and it's been a 3-4 weeks now. Almost. Charged from USB, power adapter, even a car charger, used the mass storage, frankly everything and no issues. Could it be the same problem? I'm not returning it.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

I'm having the same freeze problem.  When I plugged in the USB wall charger last night the battery was at 44%.  When I woke up this morning it was frozen.  After I soft-reset it the battery was still at 44%.

I wish we could know if this is a hardware problem or an OS problem and an ETA for a fix.

Has anyone heard acknowledgement from Nokia or Microsoft that they are working on a solution?

Are WP8 devices from other manufacturers having this problem?

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

Having the same Isue with my yellow Lumia 920. It seems to freeze up every 2-3 days forcing me to do a soft-reset. I am running the Portico update, so that definately did not help.

My first black Lumia (not running Portico) did not have this Issue at all and I am very sure that I have the same software installed as I simply reinstalled the backup I made back then.

I have tried turning off the Lockscreen settings, deinstalling apps that control the lockscreen, reinstalling skype and facebook as some people suggested with no luck up to now.

I will most likely get my phone exchanged today as this is very annoying. I really hope MS and Nokia get this sorted out ASAP.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

Hi Guys

Just thought I'd quickly Google to find out if people are still having this issue and lone behold.....

I received my Lumia 920 White on EE at launch back in November.  The Nokia holding screen freeze happened a few times and after reading up on here find out how to carry out the soft reset.  At first I turned a blind eye to it but it started to happen on a more regular basis and I'd read cases where they'd freeze at the Nokia screen and never turn back on.  I spoke to Phones 4 U, who were very helpful and arranged a replacement phone same day in store.

I'm now on my second Lumia 920 and guess what......the problem has reappeared.  It's happen twice so far, I'm trying to track my user habits at the point of crashing but it varies from time to time.  Today it happened whilst connect to a BMW Bluetooth system, the other day it was just in my pocket.  Also the holding of the buttons to force a reset doesn't always work (squeaky bum time)  When it does reboot like someone else has mentioned it resets times, dates, etc....

There's definitely something more serious to the root of this problem.  Nokia, we need answers!

I'm getting slightly annoyed with it now hence this rant.  I don't want to be left one day with a brick and lose all my stored information.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

Had the issue with freezing phone while connected to bluetooth device (in my car) and "Reading incoming messages while connected to bluetooth" where set to ON. Phone freezes at the moment of a new SMS arrived and phone read it. After disabling that function everything start to work properly without freezing.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

I've disabled that feautre, didn't want any comprising text messages being read out in front of the wrong person haha.

On a whole I'm really enjoying my Lumia experience and I don't want it to come to an end with this stupid bug.  If it is a hardware issue, Nokia need to get it sorted ASAP.

Being a long standing iPhone user (from the beginning) making the move back to Nokia was a big decision, I don't want it to be the wrong one.

I've since converted two iPhone user friends to the Lumia 920, they have both experienced the phone restarting by itself but not freezing on the black Nokia screen.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

The Lumia 920 does seem to be a little sensitive to the user's choice of apps installed. Unless an app has been optimised for WP8 it can make the phone unstable. Eg. the official FourSquare app will make the phone unstable, so try the alternative "4th & Mayor" instead.

What apps do you have installed?

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

[ Edited ]

I am currently on my second 920 as the first had a bad headphone jack. Now the replacement 920 has this problem as well. It happens always overnight, and happens if on USB charge, on wireless charge, and many times when not on charge at all. It happens to me about 3 time per week.

My wife has the red 920 and it has never happened to her phone.

I wish there was some kind of system logging built into the phone or OS so that I could review exactly what the last operation or event was and maybe even determine exactly when the phone froze.

I always have to recover the phone using the Volume-Down button with the Lock button (reboot).

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

For those of us experiencing lockups nearly every night when charging the 920 via USB I think I might have a workaround.

Before connecting it to the USB charger power off the phone.  Then wait a little bit (10 or more seconds) and plug it in and let the phone turn itself back on.

The last three nights I have not awoken to a frozen phone.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

Hi Guys n Gals,

I seem to be having this issue as well, every so often under heavy use the phone freezes, if I let the problem run its course it will then go blank and the picture will come back. However the phones time will have changed.

I have followed nokia's suggestion of hard resetting and I am awaiting the issue again.... I'll let you know if it works.

Paul.

Re: Nokia Lumia 920 freezing

@dominicsedgwick

Both Shazam and Skype are known to cause issues.

There is no replacement for Skype yet as far as I know, but you can try SoundHound as a replacement for Shazam.
