All right, the result has yet to be seen because my phone freezes only during the night, odd is that while I'm using it during day time, there is absolutely no problem with it. Everything works, no freezing. It's such a great phone finally from Nokia, would be a shame if they couldn't work on making it a reliable handset. However, many thanks for the brief walk-through, as I said, I appreciate your help very much!

Hello everyone!
My freezes seem to be fixed after I got following updates:
1) extra+info
2) display+brightness
3) access point name
My freezes were definitely related to wifi. When my phone was connected to wifi it used to freeze within 10 hours or so. When there was no wifi available it never froze. So this is the third or fourth day without a freeze and I even left my phone turned on over night (I never do) and surprise: not frozen this morning! Hope this is permanent. I also think this is not hardware related.

Hi hillsrob, just a question on your carrier, I'm curious about it!
Do they really send replacement phones by courier after calling them by phone ?
If so, how do you return the other (supposedly) broken handset to them at that point?
...
As for HERE maps, maybe it wasn't working on the previous phone just because it was not updated to Portico?
Please let us know how does this new handset behave!
Hi CloudStrife,
Yes they did send me a replacement by courier at my work address. I just handed the courier my old phone and packaging and he handed me a new one
'Fair Play' to EE for dealing with the problem so efficiently.
Yes I think the HERE software didn't work because I had not received the Portico update by then. Why I didn't receive it, I have no idea.
So far 4 days with no freeze. IMEI is 35414905-494xxxx. I have all my old apps re-installed from backup and I use the phone in just the same way as before. Fingers and toes crossed ![]()
I'll report back in another week or sooner if I get another freeze.

When did you receive these updates?
My new Lumia 920 receives some updates just a few days ago (can't remember what updates), but it still freezes sometimes.

Apparently there is a new small firmware update that EE users are getting which someone theorised may be to fix the freezing issue. Can anyone on EE confirm?

Man I hope there is something. My phone is sitting on my desk at home doing nothing. I am really **bleep** that I am paying for something I can't use, although I am not minding using my old iPhone 4 again.

I have noticed that my phone really don't like if there are things running when it is in power saving / display off mode. I used my phone as a torch (with flashlight xt) a while back and set the display off to not accidentally turn of the flash. My phone rebooted/freezed every 15-30 mins = about 3 times during the time I needed some light while working in dark. So whether there are some background tasks running or flashlight or anything there is possibility that my phone will freeze/reboot during them.

Fix Microsoft and Nokia the problem Frozen for Windows phone 8 AND talks after for sales and others stuff. I have to return My Nokia Lumia 920 because always frozen. I don't buy next time WINDOWS PHONE 8. Buy Nokia and Microsoft.
This is Why people don't buy WP8. Is sucks. And always support Microsoft but now turn for Google side.

Well, after accurately going through and disabling/switching off all the background apps, updates and automatic syncs included in the list below I managed to stabilize my phone. This means for the past 3 days my phone has been up and running around the clock and I'm not missing anything because failing to wake up in time to a dead alarm clock. All in all, the phone is great piece of integrity, value and quality to me. However, if the problem of freezing persisted I would have given a thought about moving back to Android. I do understand there may be dozen of issues leading to different sorts of malfunctions, but for those who had the same problem (occasionally freezing phone during night time, that is to say while not being used for 7-8 hours), the list below should prove to be the temporary cure until the ultimate solution comes from Microsoft/Nokia.

marcellmalta wrote:Hi, thanks so much for the info. Unfortunately I haven't found the full list of things that are supposed to be disabled in the background. If you could paste it in a new post I would really appreciate that!
Ok so here we go, the list of things I did (and suggest to do) in order to get my phone affordable until the freezing issue is acknowledged and fixed:
1) SIM: turn off the phone, then remove the SIM. Turn on the phone (yes, without SIM!) and press "OK" when prompted. Then leave it on without sim for about 10/15 minutes. It should perform some cleaning tasks even if you don't see anything about it. Then turn it off, insert the sim, and turn it on again.
2) Settings -> Disable "automatic backup": make sure you disable SMS backup too. (you will often do a backup manually if you want. Reboot the phone after doing a manual backup).
3) X-Box Settings -> Disable X-Box live persistent connection: it's found under the settings of the xbox game app.
4) Settings -> Disable all the "find my phone" options (push notifications, send position...)
5) Settings -> Disable automatic phone updates: remove the flag from all the check boxes
6) Settings -> Applications: disable all the background activities, especially HERE Maps and gMaps (if you got it).
7) Settings -> Applications: go to "photo and camera" options, and disable automatic uploads to Skydrive. It's on the bottom, one of the last options in that section.
8) Settings -> Disable "feedback"
9) Settings -> Disable automatic update of date and time (I left it enabled however, I think you can try leaving it enabled too, since I don't think this would cause any freeze. In my opinion it runs once as the phone boots).
10) After installing UPDATES from the Marketplace, make sure you manually reboot the phone: just turn it off and then turn it on. (some scheduled activities after updates installation can lead the phone to hang)
WiFI notice (optional, maybe this won't happen to you!): some users reported freezes of the phone when WiFi is enabled and being in some specific areas (free WiFi networks?). Some others reported having it freeze with their home wifi but NOT with the wifi network at their workplace. It's possible that the configuration of some wifi networks (or access points) is not well managed by our phone. This may occurr perhaps even in some areas where there are free WiFi networks and the phone tries to connect. If you experience some of the issues above, just disable automatic network scan under the WiFi settings: you will enable it manually when required (i.e.: when you arrive at work, or back home. I always did so even with my old Lumia 710, just to maximize the battery duration).
Bluetooth notice (optional too): some users report having issues with some bluetooth devices, such as car bluetooth kit. Maybe it can be due to some incompatibility that we hope it will be addressed soon. In the meantime, if that's the case, just disable Bluetooth (it will reduce battery consumption as well). Mine works great with my car system, but maybe I'm just lucky because my car has the "blue&me" system, that is developed by Microsoft..
After doing so, please make sure you reboot the phone.
No soft reset, just turn it off, then on again the legal way. This way it can successfully save all the changes to the configuration and clean what should be cleaned.
Give it a try this way.
And remember to reboot (turn off/turn on) after installing updates from the Marketplace.
It should improve your experience with the phone, while waiting for official fix.
Hope to having been helpful.

Pls see my My sad experience:
On 31st.DEC,2012, bought the phone in Jarir bookstore on Olaya street,Riyadh
On 1st.JAN,2013, the phone have no response, I went to Jarir bookstore, I requested to change one.But he restarted and it seems OK, I accepted and came back.
After that ,the problem appeared again and again.
About 13th or 14th of JAN, I went to NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat , they updated the software and I collect the phone the next day.but the same problem appeared again and again.
About 20th or 21th of of JAN, I went to NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat again. they said it need to be transferred to Jeddha. I went to NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat agian and collected the phone about 6 or 8 days later.
But the same problem appeared again and again and I went to NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat again and requeted to change the phone at once on 2rd of Feb. They said they can not change ,they need to transferred to Jedhha and I have to call the Nokia hotline to request to change another new one,it will cost about 10 dayes. Because I have to go out of Saudi on 4th of Feb, I gave up and planned to go there after I come back to Saudi.
After I came back to Saudi ,I wen to NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat and transferred the phone to NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat on 3th.Mar. The next day I receive an message from Nokia care that mentioned the phone shoulbe be transferred to factory.
On 9th.Mar I received an call from Nokia care, the woman said that my phone was ready and I can go to Nokia care center the next day. When I arrived NokiaCare2 Riyadh Mursalat on 10th evening, the guy informed me that there maybe something wrong and phone still in Jeddah.
This is a global brand. This is a new Lumia 920 phone of 2499 SAR.
I bought the phone for 2 months. The phone was not on my hand for one month and the other month I use it with the problem everyday.
Until now ,almost 10 days passed, The status on Nokia home page is in repair. I have not received any information.I am confused.

Just an update:
It's now 1 week since I received my replacement Lumia 920 from EE.
Since then the phone has worked perfectly without a single freeze. Ive used it in every mode possible. BT, WLAN, wireless charger, syncing email from multiple sources, camera, video, Facebook, YouTube, Flashlight, connecting to PC via USB etc etc etc.
I'll come back in another week to report the status.
In the meantime, my advice to everyone is
TAKE IT BACK
Don't be fobbed off with anything less that a fully functional and reliable phone.
This phone is my 6th Lumia 920 in 4 months and finally I seem to have what I am paying for. When it works as it should, this phone is the best there is

Also.. not sure if this happened to anyone. The freeze also happened to me when I first unboxed the phone before even putting in my sim. I left the phone (on the first initial setup screen) charging for a few hours until I start using it... when BAM! it froze and required a reset. I panicked at the time thinking the power supply bricked it or something, until I figured out how to reset it.
My point is the fact that this happened out of the box before even setting it up, shows that the issue is NOT:
- an app that I installed
- any sim card issue
- any wifi issue
- anything that can be fixed with a factory reset
To me this points at something either hardware related or something to do with one of the preinstalled apps (for example the Nokia apps).
I just got an update for HERE drive Beta... it never occurred to me to uninstall this, but I'm hoping that this is the update that solves the issue. Anyone know anything about this?
2013-03-15 11:25
Freeze strainght out from also happened to me. I had connected it to internet via wifi though, but no sim or installed apps.
Now the freezing issue has become more infrequent, like 1-2 times per week, and I think it might have something to do with apps/updates being checked/installed to the device. Every time I install application(s) or update(s) the freeze will happen, not right away but it some point.
It's a pain, but I'm still hoping some update will fix it.
2013-03-15 15:44
Unfortunately my freezeless experience lasted only 4 days. It's freezing now again once a day.
Interestingly in those 4 days I didn't use whatsapp which usually forces my wifi to stay enabled even during being locked. I hope a final fix arrives with the just announced firmware updates for the new lumias.
2013-03-16 17:25
Nokia has officially announced a firmware update (version 1232.5957.1308.00xx) being rolled out these days.
They report it will also include improvements to stability and reliability.
As soon as I get it I will re-enable all the background tasks I disabled before, and see what happens. Hope they've been able to fix the freezing bug.
To folks still having the freezing issue, I suggest once again to disable all the stuff mentioned in the list before, and make sure to update the Nokia apps from the Marketplace (display+brightness, access point name, here maps, here drive, extra+info) since some users report they've got no more freezings after updating those apps.
And remember to turn off the phone after installing the updates.
As for me, it's about 3 weeks of absolutely no freezings having followed the steps in the list posted some days ago.

This is a epic fail of Nokia. I had now 3 phones so far, 2 new and one exchanged, by the service.
Beside the original apps I had not one app downloaded, all updates installed and whatever I do, the Phone is freezing every day 2-3 times in STANDBY mode !!!!! can you imagine, you even dont know that the phone is down untill you would like to start it.
this is incredible for a Business phone and a phone used for medical standby !!!!!!!
**bleep** NOKIA and MS ??? why Nokia doesnt give a statement to this ???? I will have my money back !!! but instead Nokia just offered me a used exchange phone, everytime I asked for the problem. **bleep** ? I payed 700 euros !!!

Yeah, It seems that a new fw (1232.5957.1308.00xx) will fix that ...
You can use Nokia Software Updater for Retail 2.0.6 to update your fw (you will lose all your personal data, so make a back up, before updating)
