Nokia / MS must encourage app developers

Still, so many apps are only available for iOS and Android. If Nokia and Microsoft wants this ecosystem to grow, they must now enforce to make it much more attractive to also port apps to Windows Phone.

The total number of apps available is not very interesting; I don't care if I have 20 or 100 calculator apps to choose from. But most company specific apps are never ported to Windows Phone, and therefore I have zero variants of those to choose from.

Two examples.

  • The public transport authority, UL, in Uppsala, Sweden, develops an app for convenient buying 10-punch tickets in the mobile. Only for iOS and Android.
  • My Internet service provider, Com Hem, to which also my landline phone is connected, develops an app for calling via your landline subscription, anywhere in the world, as if you called from home. Only for iOS and Android.

Re: Nokia / MS must encourage app developers

In many of these case, especially for local or region based apps it's simply not viable to expect Nokia/MSFT to sponsor or otherwise trigger developers to create an app for WP. In most cases developers simply do not want to spend the time and/or money on a WP app. Having users contact developers is usually the best way, Being polite and pointing to the excellent development tools is a good  start. Asking them to contact Nokia/MSFT for help would also work..

Re: Nokia / MS must encourage app developers

Apps can be ported between Android, ios, BB10 and Tizen fairly easily but WP8 apps have to be written from the ground up. Not many developers find this worthwhile. I certainly agree that app numbers are more gimmicky than useful. It's better to have 5000 quality apps than 100,000 **bleep** apps.

Re: Nokia / MS must encourage app developers

Not an issue any more. It is now far more convenient to make a WP8 app than one for other platforms. This is because one can make a app for the PC and with minimal touching up have it work on WinRT and WP8 devices straight away. The problem is converting it to Linux (Android) and IOS devices. MS just need to educate industry a bit. WP is no longer in isolation. Still, education is critical as outside of MS's compression app we still have no data counter and no file manager, to mention just two, which is just embarrassing.
